“Local offices control the machinery of democracy in our country.” @benwikler.bsky.social We have all been guilty of ignoring local politics and focusing on the national shitstorm. It’s Election Day, Seattle. Use @electioncheatsheet.org and let’s do this!

If your District 5 candidate is “totally not endorsed just RECOMMENDED” by Tree Action Seattle, you might want to reconsider how committed they are to “cutting red tape that slows affordable housing development.”
"Tree Action Seattle is not associated with any of these endorsements" as posted by Tree Action Seattle 🙃
If you know someone 18-25, or you or friends have young adults home for summer, get them to vote! They want to but sometimes have obstacles finding their ballot, deciding who to vote for, how to vote, etc. Show them electioncheatsheet.org if left leaning - and use ballot boxes, not mail.

100 years ago? My oldest grandparent was 2. My great-grandparents though…well I’d either be selling furniture in downtown LA or driving an NYC subway car.
Albert Wong (@awongpublic.bsky.social) has a new post up about the Seattle Public Schools budget. This one is how central office has grown since 2014, and where, but even if we cut it all that's not enough to fill the structural budget hole.
Cracking the Budget #2: The Central Office Grew. Cutting It Won’t Save Us.
SPS added 269 district-office FTE since 2014 — but strip out the recodes and restricted funding and only about 48 FTE are worth examining…

SPD Wondering What’s Taking Mayor Katie Wilson So Long to Find Second Shooting Suspect: tinyurl.com/3jkm7ff2
If you’ve seen this article, you may be sitting with anger, pain, or just exhaustion at dealing with another helping of colonial nonsense. We feel a responsibility to speak back when these colonizing narratives show up, yet again, in such a prominent venue. endangeredlanguages.com/story/respon...
The idea that we have a special duty to prevent the death of languages is instantly compelling to anyone who loves languages. But is it true? www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
More lessons from Napoleon! "And anyway, how can I help it if a surfeit of power draws me towards dictatorship of the world?"
So I’m going to keep doing that work. And in the meantime as we grapple together with fear and grief, if it helps you to yell at someone, I know it’s tempting to point to @mayor.seattle.gov because mayors are visible and #waleg isn’t. But yell at me. I deserve it a whole lot more.
So Hollingsworth could've just funded school meals thru FEPP the way the mayor intended but b/c Joy's career ambitions mean she has to sabotage Wilson's every move, now she has to take the hit for voting AGAINST school meals AND the hit for defunding something else to pay for it? Brain Genious 🏅
Norway kept meticulous track of jews (and other ethnicities) in the time leading up to the war, which resulted in us being among the top most effective countries at sending our small jewish population to the camps once under nazi rule. We learned the hard way that some data is best not kept.
Why wouldn’t the city use AlertSeattle to tell people to shelter in place and not come downtown? If not for an event like this, then what? We found out through All City Marching Band of all things
I think this is a Tree Lady and she just used “The Children Are Watching” and like yeah they totally are, and are hearing you say trees are more important than their needs in this city.

Now Council is proposing to pull this funding from our general fund, which is already facing a $175 million deficit. I look forward to seeing which critical services they plan to cut from the general fund to make their numbers work.
it's cool in a lot of ways, not least of which is making incumbent political consultants very upset
There's no split, progressive organizations have overwhelmingly endorsed Ron Davis over Will Dreher Image from electioncheatsheet.org @electioncheatsheet.org

Foster really screwed up on this issue, so early in her term. I’m glad for the reconsideration, but why did it take massive community outreach for her to read the room?
WOW. New announcement from Seattle CMs Strauss, Hollingsworth, and Foster saying they will fund universal school meals starting in the fall after all by using the general fund. Hard to see this as anything but a realization of the high political price they paid for their votes yesterday.
So CM Dionne Foster burned all that progressive cred for what, exactly?

What a degenerate. So many families have members on both sides of the border, work, shop or attend school in the other country, no American who has spent 5 minutes in Canada shares this view, not one
Peter Navarro claims that Canadian officials are "some of the most dishonest people I've ever met. They stab you in the back ... they're screwing us"
Yet somehow there's this persistent narrative that everywhere north of the ship canal is a wealth of money, fame, and fortune that is unmatched anywhere in the county. It's true that the north end is on average better off than south Seattle but that's still not a universal experience!
This is not the only teacher who does this, it’s common to see instant soup and juice packs in the backs of classrooms, many teachers stock protein bars in the cabinets, I know a teacher who brings Costco deli packs and crackers every week, another keeps fresh oranges or apples in a bowl
Another teacher talking about how they buy food for their students. "i will continue to buy food for my students but I would rather not drop $5-600 a school year [of their own money]" SHEEZIS WHAT ARE WE EVEN DOING HERE PPL
