i've been watching old King of the Hill since I liked the revival seasons (before that I was just watching clip compilations). I started on Season 4 to see what the show looked like in its prime and WOW i didn't think this one would have so many iconic moments
Well you gotta understand, a fundamental ethos of modern conservatism is "Mom can't tell me what to do"
honestly, the fact that we have made it through the atomic age *without* another use of nuclear weapons since 1945 is a miracle we don't fully appreciate
Today is the day the story There Will Come Soft Rain is set. An amazing and heartbreaking work of fiction for our modern age. Read it here:
I have lived thru the original Mummy (Mummies), the Mummy Cinematic Universe, the Mummy reboot, and now Mummy 4: Brand New Mummy
Oded Fehr, who played Ardeth Bay in THE MUMMY and THE MUMMY RETURNS, has joined the cast of THE MUMMY 4. Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz will star. From directors Radio Silence. In theaters October 15, 2027.
holy shit, Rosemary Harris (who I know as Aunt May in the Raimi Spider-Man movies) is still alive at age 98. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHLC...

"Pastors in Name Only" "Wicked Witch of Woke" “I've never seen anyone commit so much blasphemy against the word of God." As pastors become Democratic nominees — at least 5 so far, and likely one more tonight — their Republican opponents are attacking their faith. religionnews.com/2026/08/04/p...
'They're not real pastors': As clergy run as Democrats, Republicans question their faith
(RNS) — 'It's a sign that they are really scared they're gonna lose this seat,' the Rev. Sarah Trone Garriott, a Lutheran pastor running for Congress in Iowa, said. She is part of a wave of religious ...

today i learned about a diocese of the episcopal church that has four (4) full-time clergy
Going to agree with those saying less social trust but I think parents face more pressure to be everything for their children these days? Like if you leave them with anyone else too much, you're a failure of a parent.
I feel like there’s a lot of interlocking pieces. 1) young teens are seen more as children, not potential caretakers 2) young teens are a lot busier all the time with extracurriculars than in my day 3) parents are busier shuttling kids to (2)
so a thing I have really noticed among the U.S. upper-middle-class is that they use babysitters far, far less than their parents' generation.
I was baptized thirteen years ago today! And I even spoke with the priest who baptized me on the phone this morning. ⚓
Omg my 11th baptism anniversary is tomorrow. I don’t know the next time August 4 will be a Sunday
Finally saw The Odyssey, which is the consummate Christopher Nolan film in that it has moments of near-sublime spectacle that make you believe in Big Movies again mixed together with dialogue like, "Our Age of Bronze is ending."
This is cute 🤷♂️ 🕸️ sometimes our minds don’t need to be in the gutter
no
one time i cry-laughed at this. not my best moment
Here come dat boi! O shit waddup
Genuinely, the vast majority of American voters believe that only laziness or criminal intent could be stopping the average immigrant from obtaining US citizenship. The truth is that becoming a US citizen takes years upon years of work and requires navigating a baroque bureaucratic nightmare.
I remember a family member of mine saying “isn’t it like going to the DMV?”
They will probably never get kicked out of the “social media” label, but— video apps aren’t social, barely ever were. 90+% of those videos are made by someone the watcher doesn’t know. IG and TikTok are extra strength television— faster, worse, even more scattering, even less curation or coherency.
I have thoughts on this, but perhaps I'll do a bad social media for now and let them percolate rather than responding with the snap take lol I will say it's sorta bleakly funny seeing this logic being applied to television, when that itself is now under threat by even shorter video forms.
Brand New Day made it into the preaching. I spoiled the entire plot. Then I read leaks of Avengers Doomsday. People vomited. God is good
do i get to talk about Brand New Day plot beats yet
they should just call it a riff because girl tummy is not mid
do i get to talk about Brand New Day plot beats yet
i won't lie i think the Trisagion rocks but i like the way the more literal "Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal" flows off the tongue better
Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, have mercy upon us.
Spider-Man debuted in 1962. (He didn't even debut in his own series, but in the anthology Amazing Fantasy.) So next year will mark 65 years! You're an old man, Pete.
reading an Avengers Doomsday plot leak which i am convinced is real
Just learned the jeopardy priest David Sibley just got elected a bishop in Kentucky
The anti-intellectualism and anti-arts we see today in part reflects a fear of an educated working class. Hence a college-educated barista is elite, a biz owner driving a $70k truck is coded as working class. It’s endemic on both sides of the Atlantic.
Luther's distinction between a theology of the cross and a theology of glory remains evergreen
I sincerely have no remote comprehension for what people like this mean by “being a Christian” — it’s so far afield from everything I read in Scripture and the testimony of the Saints and the Doctrines of the Church.
O spare me a little, that I may recover my strength: before I go hence, and be no more seen. (Psalm 39:15)
in this King of the Hill episode, Bobby was failing English so he convinced Peggy to write a paper for him that lands an A. She then gets jealous of the praise her 11 year old child is getting 💀 this might be controversial but i can't get enough of Peggy

"The people who work on farms often don't own them" is something that would have been completely intuitive to 99% of people for 99% of human history but is completely unintelligible to the people who make US public policy.
A very serious Rural Politico once told me "Dems have to go to farmer meetings! We gotta be where the people are!" I was in fact in a farmer meeting at that very moment! So I live-texted him the meeting. They were complaining that they want indentured workers that they don't have to pay or feed.
The DSA in Wilmingotn, N.C. has created a "crisis" by putting benches at city bus stops, after literal decades of the city promising and failing to do so.
Democratic Socialists’ bus benches remain, city mum on next steps | Port City Daily
WILMINGTON — The handmade bus benches installed by the Wilmington Democratic Socialists of America have highlighted a problem nearly everyone agrees exists: most Wave bus stops have nowhere for riders...
