Macklemore has this extremely Seattle earnestness that is pure cringe to 90% of the rest of the country, but I knew it would see him through in the end. What is cringe but earnestness persevering

You can also apparently enter your personal collections into the state fair, because the last thing I saw before I left this building was some guy's Trek collection. Including a Tom Paris (and others) commemorative plate!

Me, a blonde white woman in jeans, a white fleece, and a blue raincoat, throwing up a LLAP next to an impressive collection of Star Trek paraphernalia in a glass case. Romulan ale, Klingon blood wine, Saurian brandy, James T. Kirk bourbon Commemorative plates and mugs!! The plates group characters by job; the first is security officers (Chekov, Yar, Odo, Tuvok), the second is helm, I guess? (Sulu, Data, Paris, and Worf for some reason?), the third is doctors (McCoy, Crusher, Bashir, EMH), the fourth is presumably captains (Kirk, Sisko's ear [the rest of him is obscured by the doctor plate], Janeway).

My neighborhood Mission bar/restaurant that I've been going to for 20+ years has replaced their coloring page kids' menu & crayons with this. I'll be sending a strongly worded email to management, which is frankly more punk than this nonsense.

AI slop illustration of a (shudder) "punk rock cantina" with a band playing on a stage, a car with flames, a...treasure trunk made out of studded leather, maybe?, a dumpster with a PUNKS DEAD poster and a little gremliny chupacabra peeking out. The band and the audience all appear to be white people, insofar as they appear to be people. The drummer seems to be non-existent, and the drum kit consists of a single bass drum fused to a PA stack. The title reads "HOW MANY CHUPACABRAS CAN YOU FIND? They're hiding in the punk rock cantina!"

There is no exact answer; there are at least 8 or 9 but several others seem to be phasing in and out of existence. Maybe it's a fey thing.

it is unforgivable how Democrats are granting the right's premise about trans kids in sports even as they attempt to navigate a "moderate" position so they don't look so bad (hint: not possible) they have literally regressed! the first bathroom bans did not have this kind of bipartisan support!!!

Apropos of smartwatch news, here's a quick plug for the e-ink, Bluetooth-only Pebble smartwatch, which does a limited number of things well (notifications for messages, weather, limited maps, normal clock stuff) and lasts a week+ on one charge. There's even an LCARS display option. repebble.com

A white woman's left wrist displaying a Pebble smartwatch. It's 6:06 PM, according the LCARS-themed display.

my favorite part about having two kids is the nine separate bicycles I’m forced to store in my single-car garage

Fuck this administration generally, and fuck them specifically today for blocking the routine renewal of my kids' beloved piano teacher's O-1B visa, meaning he can't teach the lessons he was supposed to start this week and might never be back as their teacher. Hate it!!!

Pro tip! The less you post about "Lake America," the less written evidence of its use there is, and the less likely any reputable dictionary company will enter it into their dictionaries. ONLY *YOU* CAN PREVENT BAD LEXICOGRAPHY

The eight-year-old has taken to wrapping herself in a blanket and gliding imperiously through the house, intoning "FEAR ME, CATS," so yeah, you could say we're ready for summer vacation to be done.

Nothing says "We respect the concerns of busy Seattle Public School parents" like sending them all a 42-minute youtube video message to watch. No captions, either, which is an odd choice when special ed is one of the big negotiating sticking points.

The word “y’all” is the South’s gift to the English speaking world. A warm, genderless, elegant solution to the language’s odd lack of a formal contraction for “you all”. You can use it. Really, we don’t care.

My favorite "Hold up, is that...Tim Curry??" voice-acting role is, of course, mad scientist Dr. Anton Sevarius from GARGOYLES, whose lab coat has short sleeves (?) and who at one point fakes his own death by electric eels

A cartoon still; a mad scientist with brown hair and light skin and an inexplicably short-sleeved lab coat writhes in a puddle of teal water spilled from a broken tank off screen. Four eels (several fish, not a guy) and bolts of electricity are wrapped around him.
