Latest Highland Park Way SW design maintains bike lane protection up to the W Marginal Way intersection
SDOT is standing by its reworked design for a new downhill protected bike lane on Highland Park Way SW. But the biggest improvement should be to the safety of people inside cars. The project is planned for construction "as soon as February 2027," according to the project webpage. Highland Park Way is a long, steep hill through a greenbelt has no major intersections the entire way from SW Holden Street at the top to W Marginal Way SW at the bottom where it meets with the Duwamish Trail. Though the downhill direction is fed by only one lane at a time, it currently widens out to two lanes, a design that encourages speeding and increases danger without improving traffic throughput.

Holy crap. Level 3 (GO NOW!) zone now includes urban Spokane, south of Francis to Wellesley. Level 2 (GET SET!) zone now extends east of Division. Not to be alarmist, but at this rate, it’s not inconceivable that the Old Trails Fire merges with the Fairview Fire.

Map from a Washington State Patrol press memo (PDF). The 51-year-old woman who died Tuesday after colliding with a gate on the 1st Avenue South Bridge has been identified as Janine Cross. Our condolences to her friends and family. Janine was riding a Letric XPLite northbound in the biking and walking path of the bridge shortly before noon when she "struck the bridge gate," according to a Washington State Patrol press memo (PDF). It is not clear from the memo or from follow-up questions to WSP specifically which gate she struck.

Not only are there Bicycle Weekends every non-SeaFair weekend, but a coalition of community groups are getting together to host the first Lake WA Blvd Bash, a free festival of music and food in the middle of the historic car-free route. From noon to 7 p.m. August 15, join the Seattle Streets Alliance, Bike Works and Outdoors For All at the Ferdinand Street Hand Carry Boat Launch. Can be enjoyed from land or water, so bring your paddleboard or floaties if that's your style.

From the Bike League's action alert. Though one cannot expect a policy out of the Trump Administration to be based in reality, it is still important to push against their firehose of awful ideas. The corrupt former mid-level reality TV personality cosplaying as Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently posted that USDOT would be directing funding away from "DEI bike lanes," whatever that means. This was followed two days later by an order to scrub information about the safety benefits of proven interventions like bike lanes and speed cameras from the USDOT website.
