We didn't previously integrate wildfire-smoke costs into the supposed cost of climate change for the US, and it turns out to be bigger than all those other costs combined. Oops! Gosh I wonder if we're underestimating anything else. Probably shoulda done something about this. Ah well.

There has been an explosion in #urbanheat monitoring using low-cost meteorological sensors. In our paper (doi.org/10.1175/BAMS...) in Bulletin of @ametsoc.org, we empirically show why we need to be careful about large biases in such sensors; & provide guidelines for their effective deployment.

Let's do some Canadian pipeline-wildfire math. The Canadian Energy Center says growing oil exports by 1.5M barrels/day **could** boost GDP by ~31B annually. Meanwhile, wildfire smoke health costs alone - just the health costs, nothing else - averaged 23B/year, past tense. And they're growing fast.

This is one of those videos that reminds me of that tweet: “Climate change will manifest as a series of disasters viewed through phones with footage that gets closer and closer to where you live until you're the one filming it.”

Carbon capture is expensive and largely ineffective at making a real difference on emissions. Especially when the captured carbon can be used for enhanced oil recovery, which lets companies access oil that would have otherwise stayed in the ground!!!

For example, in the US about 2/3 of people are worried about climate change. But do you know how many are activated? 8%. That’s a gap of nearly 60% who are worried but don’t know what to do. Science causes this “lack of efficacy”. And efficacy is *directly correlated* with willingness to act.
