"It's set up in such a skewed way that people win seats with less than 30 per cent of the vote. Governments now are formed with 30 per cent of the popular vote." Doesn't sound like representative government to us. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Parti Québécois win with record-low vote share revives calls for electoral reform | CBC News

A record-low vote share for Quebec's incoming PQ government has reignited a long-simmering debate over how the province elects its leaders.

Quebec’s election saw one of the most distorted election results in Canadian history: the PQ won 46% of seats with 28% vote, while the CAQ got zero seats with over 500,000 votes. Read our write-up to see how proportional representation fixes this. www.fairvote.ca/06/10/2026/p...

Under first-past-the-post, party leaders maintain rigid control because members risk isolation and career ruin by leaving. Under proportional representation, members can easily break away if ignored. This means leaders must remain receptive to members to keep them from walking.

Some Liberal MPs say there is growing frustration that maintaining strong ties with caucus does not appear to be a priority for Carney, with some finding it increasingly difficult to secure one-on-one meetings with their leader. www.hilltimes.com?p=518679

We analyzed some of Ford’s most controversial Toronto decisions and found they all target safe opposition ridings. Under first-past-the-post, unneeded ridings get sacrificed. Proportional representation ensures votes everywhere build seats, so no community can be steamrolled.

Infographic showing Doug Ford's targeted decisions affecting Downtown Toronto. A map marks bike lanes on Bloor, Yonge, and University, Billy Bishop Airport, and Ontario Place in opposition held ridings. Icons repeat these targets, stating safe opposition seats do not help Ford's majority, so they are sacrificed for suburban swing ridings.

"In Canada, every provincial premier, of every political stripe, is guilty of adhering to the new climate denialism. It is now clear, however, that today, our country’s leading practitioner is Prime Minster Mark Carney." #CdnPoli

The essence of the idea is this: while conventional climate denialism simply refuses to accept the reality of human-induced climate change (think Donald Trump), this new form of denialism sees our political leaders assure us they understand and accept the scientific warnings about climate change — but they are in denial about what this scientific reality means for policy and/or continue to block progress in less visible ways. Others, perhaps more kindly, call this “all-the-above policy-making,” the inclination of political leaders to tell the public that we need not make hard choices. Whatever term one uses, the result is the continuing sorry state of Canadian political non-leadership on the defining challenge of our time.

Given all the announcements this week, thought I'd reissue this piece from a week ago. The answer BTW is YES! Is Prime Minister Carney a climate denier? sethdklein.substack.com/p/is-prime-m...

Why are BCers facing a costly, unnecessary snap election? First-past-the-post. When 40% of the vote can deliver an increased majority, politicians choose power grabs over cooperation. Proportional representation removes these toxic incentives. Read our statement: www.fairvote.ca/22/09/2026/f...

I think it's ill-advised and anti-democratic to introduce an omnibus bill, cite a crisis, and rush major changes to labour and environmental law. It's going to provoke aggressive resistance and risks, ironically, slowing down the projects the government is so keen on. It's going to be a huge mess.

The federal government tabled new legislation Monday to make sweeping changes to environmental and labour rules, in Mark Carney’s latest effort to remove what he sees as barriers to development in pursuit of his pro-growth agenda.
