Whatever direction they take, please hold on your polling error posts until we are at >99% vote in.
Looks like a 10-15 point polling miss in Michigan regardless of who wins. And people have been writing a lot of electability takes using this data. It’s dangerous out there folks be safe
103 years ago today- the dramatic start to the Coolidge presidency
Aug. 3, 1923: Calvin Coolidge is sworn in as 30th president of the U.S. following the death of Warren Harding. The oath is administered at 2:47 a.m. by his own father, John Calvin Coolidge Sr., at the family homestead in Plymouth Notch, Vt., by the light of a kerosene lamp. 1/8

I love the closeups of the metal shields sliding over the faces in the paintings, no witnesses! #hatm
I love the ending reverse-heist sequence from this, absolutely thrilling!
And welcome to Historians at the Movies! Tonight we are live posting THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1999) on Prime. It’s about money, theft, and… romance. 1/
Books are so heavy and book people are so protective & sentimental about them and the vast majority of books (though crucially not all!) are just not worth much and I get paid retail wages to be basically a death doula for middle-aged democrats’ popular nonfiction hoards lmao. pls make my job easier
If only we had a metaphor for persistently attempting to do something excessively difficult
They out here making Spiderman 17 but couldn't be bothered to make one of the easiest stories "Badass motha fucker killing vampires"
Harrison Ford, the actor behind loveable scoundrels Han Solo and Indiana Jones, started his career as an on-set carpenter. That makes him a roguelike deckbuilder.
There probably was someone called Emily Wilson who wrote a critical review of Nolan’s Odyssey, but most of what we now think of as “Wilson’s review’ is probably the result of codifying a long tradition of anonymous Bluesky posting.
now that the odyssey is a hit can someone green light my Trial and Death of Socrates
Just got out of Terrance Malik’s adaptation of the Odyssey. It is one of the most visually stunning things over committed to film. Odysseus (Adrian Brody) remains out of frame for the entire film and is only briefly heard in voiceover. Also, there are dinosaurs for some reason.

I wrote about the Nolan Odyssey for the LRB. I'll summarize some of my main points below, in case you don't feel like reading all that. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...
Emily Wilson · An Uncomplicated Man
As they say at the awards shows, I was humbled to learn that Christopher Nolan has read at least the first line of my...

Many Americans don’t know that Senators used to be elected by snake legislatures
a fun thing you can do to enliven history is to replace “state” with “snake”
this new episode of the vergecast about how google’s push into ai summaries has broken a tenuous social contract with publishers is REALLY good it’s such an obvious example of google’s hubris that they assumed siphoning traffic and ruining their own ad business wouldn’t have any consequences

Twice a year, Hawai'i experiences a strange moment where the sun appears to be exactly overhead & anything that is completely vertical casts no shadow. Let's learn about Lāhainā Noon, subsolar points & 'Kau ka lā i ka lolo', meaning "the sun rests on the brains."
If you say "Pluto is a planet" you're gonna go fascist one day it's just a matter of time
I don't think anyone has a plan for "what if 40% of the country is Like That forever" in part because there really isn't a good one
I was told we'd cruise the seas for Iranian Oil. We'd fire no effectors, shed no interceptors. Now I'm a broken chud on a Norfolk pier, that last of Mike Lee's privateers.
Q: HEY whatcha reading...? A: This 3-vol, 1000+ pp. historical novel "about" 20th c. European antifascist resistance suggested by an artist friend. Reads like an exquisite corpse penned by Proust, Marx, Kafka & Walter Benjamin. 50 pp intro by F. Jameson took me 6 weeks; the actual text is easier.
Still my favorite piece of Star Trek media ever produced.
