Even without the AI crap, there is a strong tendency to substitute quantification for thinking, and exchanges of information for communication. And yes, it produces its own special form of stupidity

I wonder if students today would be less likely to lean on AI for writing assignments if schools had made sure they could touch-type (at least 60wpm) before having them submit all their assignments online. 1/🧵

"And so Arnold began reaching out to other people who said science was untrustworthy and giving them money." A MUST-READ post about open sci/metasci funding, philanthropist agendas, and academic censorship in the name of scientific reform. There's so much I want to quote. Better read it yourself!

IMPACT: that company that was offering to buy books for AI companies’ training data — and probably destroy them in the process — says it will no longer offer this service following 404 Media’s exposure of it www.404media.co/ai-company-t...

Company Offering Printed Books to Train AI Stops After 404 Media Coverage

Citing backlash, ISBNdb removed its webpages about training AI, denied ever buying, scanning, or selling a book for AI training, and said the site was a "test of market interest."

The thing about federal bureaucracy is that all the institutional knowledge that makes them work invisibly in such as making sure your milk doesn't contain formaldehyde, is stored inside people who would make twice as much money in another job.

By exaggerating its cars' capabilities, Tesla is preying on seniors' fears about losing their mobility as their health deteriorates. It's unethical as well as deeply dangerous. This kind of thing that wouldn't happen in a country with credible oversight of car companies.

I will reiterate: Christians in the West evangelize in public for the same reason men catcall. Neither is trying to persuade you; both are reminding you that the public sphere belongs to them and you exist in it at their sufferance.

Schatz has the same pathology as Newsom: a need to show "I'm just like you" to awful people with bad values. It's not even cynicism; it yields no additional votes. Destroying USAID was an illegal act by white nationalists with genocidal intent and it has killed people. That's more than just "bad."

Gross to see a senator skip over the part where the aid was cut off illegally and without warning. Cooking their brains on a right wing owned social media site.

It is genuinely bizarre that we’ve become acclimatized to right wingers throwing a tantrum every time a black person (particularly a black woman) is cast in something, but are also supposed to pretend that this is not racism but related to some other substantive concern.

Emily is a genius; I am extremely, genuinely thrilled for her! But also: as The Odyssey sells out books and theaters alike, Classics departments and language classes are being decimated across the US. If you want more Emily Wilsons we have to FUND SCHOLARSHIP and FUND TRANSLATION AND TRANSLATORS.

“A Penn professor thought she’d sell 1000 copies of her ‘Odyssey’ translation. She sold a million this year alone, thanks to Christopher Nolan.” “West Philly's Emily Wilson, who penned a highly acclaimed translation of the epic poem in 2017, is having a big summer.”
