The AI conversation makes me bristle because I think the blame for AIs being so unpopular lies squarely on the tech industry and not the left or right or artists or whatever. Silicon Valley did a shit ass job introducing their product and they should be the ones out here trying to fix it.
What is bad is leveraging trillions of dollars, burning energy and causing ecological disruption to make chatbots that pretend to be redditors. Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, etc are all LLMs. They are bad for humanity. SciBERT, MolT, PolyTrans, ELMo are also LLMs. They are amazingly useful and good.
The replies here are a perfect example of how much advertising work has been done to confound and comingle the idea of these “general intelligence” chatbots with the field of AI and ML. LLMs and other types of Neural Networks have been used in science for amazing things. LLM does not mean bad.
