sometimes fantasy authors come up with the concept "there are things older than history and prehistory.. otherworldly things the human mind cant comprehend" and for Lovecraft that means "monster so freaky it drives you insane" and for Tolkien it means "some guy named Tom with an extremely fine wife"
rewatching Amadeus (1984) after like a billion years. it's pretty great that in a visual world of people in elaborate dress and giant wigs, that amadeus still comes across like ziggy stardust stumbling into the republican national convention
Okay I went back and recorded the WPBL anthem. I haven't seen a clip of it yet and....it needs to never be forgotten.
The tech AI mission is to literally complete the transformation of people into economic subjects. Nothing except flesh connectors serving to move capital from space to space. And that’s only as long as there isn’t a substitute for bodies.

whenever i mention memory alpha the star trek fan wiki i am always being derogatory just a heads-up
can you tell i am a star trek nerd of a doylist variety
oh. my. god. i just saw a picture of a bridge from snw and it is like 10 buttons and 5 meters of touchscreen. overall i would never criticize a show i refuse to watch but i am still going to shove it into a locker for the touchscreen thing
i havent seen any new trek so i dont know if they still put touchscreens on spaceships in those but if they did i would point and laugh
i have many feelings about star trek strange new worlds but i can't afford any opinions because i refuse to watch it
there's subtle storytelling in Picard's standard order of "Tea, Earl Grey, Hot." The ship computer is basically at a point where it's conversational but he uses it the way it might've functioned in the past, more of a command line with specific, ordered arguments, and he prefers it that way
And! One of the weeding factors librarians take into account is WHO ELSE owns the book. We are interested in preserving access, even if it's through interlibrary loan. (If you aren't sure if your public library offers that service, ask! I guarantee if they do, they'll be delighted if you use it.)
The posters saying "wait till you hear how many books the librarians shred" are being disingenuous. The destruction of books is not by itself what's causing outrage. It's in combination with many other factors, chief among them AI companies' history of unethical and even blatantly illegal actions.

there's a scene in blade runner that cracks me up, where it takes harrison ford minutes on end to zoom and pan around an image bc he talks to his computer, like a clown. and then ai bros post videos of a guy talking to photoshop and its exactly like that scene. incredible
a star trek thing that is terrible UX and isnt there for dramaturgy reasons is touchscreens in professional settings. its quaint in the 90s shows bc it actually was a futuristic set dressing back then
“Computer, Earl Grey, hot.” “Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, former Prime Minister, is primarily known for sweeping electorate reforms as well as the abolition of slavery in the British Empire, not his attractiveness. He did have sixteen children, however. Would you like more information?”
THEY TALKED TO THE COMPUTER IN STAR TREK BEACUSE ITS A *TV SHOW* AND YOU CANT HEAR WHAT SOMEONE IS TYPING NOT BEACUSE IT IS GOOD UX
