Except for religious studies, the graduates of these "loan ineligible" majors are disproportionately women. Fans of this policy have probably never considered that social worker, cosmetician, teachers aide, etc might be low-paying jobs *because* women do them. newrepublic.com/post/213446/...

Every Gender Studies major deserves an apology for every joke made at their expense. People studied STEM because everything was science and engineering. People studied CompSci because everything was computers. People studied Gender because as it turns out, everything actually is Gender.
This from @cgmaisano.bsky.social (and riffing my work, full disclosure) was illuminating: dissentmagazine.org/article/part...

Zohran Mamdani’s victory was rooted in organizations that took up the base-building and mobilization functions that once fell to parties.

this is the closest ICE has ever come to saying "yeah we just murdered a guy"
WHOA DHS does not say that the agent feared for his life… just the vague concern for “public safety.” So he killed him just because he did not want him in America, not because of any specific threat to agents?
if you thought México losing meant Los Angeles would not be blasting fireworks you would be wrong

The PA spent the last 20 years providing security cooperation to Israel, after a decade of diplomatic concessions, and the response to the end of active fighting in the West Bank from 🇮🇱 has been to massively accelerate settlement construction and completely foreclosed on the possibility of a 2SS.

Its so cool how trans people get treated as nothing more than proxies in all these internecine beefs, often specifically by the people claiming to be supporting our rights by using us as tools.
“How much is a magical world worth?” A beautiful thread about Cabo Verde, the Peace Corps, and the World Cup:
Kagan points out in the dissent here that Alito is too much of a coward to even put Trump’s supposedly non-racist statements in his opinion.
SCOTUS is all-in on ethnic cleansing for a white America. Gutter racists.
There’s been more elite Democrat anger at Democratic primary voters than outrage over the life imprisonment of anti-ICE protesters — including a couple whose only offense was printing zines. Look at what they choose to talk about with the media and what they ignore. It’s revealing!
"i'm a committed catholic. also i waited six years to baptize my child"
Alternative @nytimes.com headline: "A Jewish Democrat's Criticism of Israel May Win Him a NYC House Seat."
It’s a pretty weird week when a guy who wants to be a trillionaire is simultaneously getting headlines for the economy-shattering IPO expected Friday and the racist pogroms he is accused of stoking — but these stories are viewed as separate and in no way connected or prescient of the future.
I keep saying this: the reason [academic] didn't get hired is not that [woman or minority scholar] took their job, it is that 'their job' ceased to exist. The person in the line retired in 2010 and the department lost the fight to get the line back in 2014. No one 'took' it, it's gone.

It’s driving me a little insane seeing all the LA housing developers talking very cogently about the government dysfunction and delays that make new construction cost-prohibitive, and then saying “that’s why putting the reality TV crystal dumbass in charge of this complex system will fix things”
man, university libraries are amazing. you can just ask them to help get some obscure thing and they're like "doing that is actually our job, not only are we good at it but also we are excited to make this happen for you"
I still think these two paragraphs from Ganz are the most important contemporary political writing
Indistinguishable from 1870s Redeemer rhetoric about "Negro misrule" and the like.
NEW: U.S. House Rep. Bennie Thompson's "reign of terror" in Mississippi "is over," Gov. Tate Reeves says, urging the ousting of the state's only Black member of Congress through redistricting before the end of 2027. He made that pronouncement even as he canceled a special session on redistricting.

Back in the early '70s, my late Mom helped prevent the widening of the street we lived on, 6400 block of Glenwood Avenue. South of there, the street is widened and it's much more dangerous, with speeding drivers.
Mothers invented traffic calming.
Prof. Derek Peterson, U of Michigan historian & MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, thanked “pro-Palestinian student activists” during a grad speech today, for “opening our hearts to the injustices and inhumanity of Israel’s war in Gaza.” His words, and the cheers that followed made my heart sing.
Don’t worry guys, we’ll solve this with the next student protestor they throw the book at, the next center for western civilization, the next task force on antisemitism, the next commission on free speech, the next censure of a trans TA for giving a bad grade…
