The Salem City Council has scheduled a special meeting for Monday night. Just one item on the agenda: "Consideration of the initiation of a moratorium on AI data centers and the initiation of amendments to the City zoning code to regulate AI data centers."
Salem is the latest Oregon city facing outrage from residents over data center development. At a 6-hour city council meeting last night, residents railed against an NDA that kept this project secret for more than a year. Now, Salem officials say the city may be helpless to stop the data center.
Oregonians- You have until Aug 7 to tell the Governor's Data Center Advisory Committee exactly what you think of data centers. Send comments to datacenter.ac@oregon.gov (really; it's just an email.) Hint: the word "moratorium" is like Tinkerbell. The more that we say it, the more real it becomes.

The anti-data center movement is like "I don't want to pay more money for a thing that will not benefit me at all and will actively make my life measurably worse in a bunch of ways" and the pro-data center movement is like "We want it to be illegal for you to not like us."
😬
It’s nice to see everyone’s textual analysis of The Odyssey It’s almost like the humanities give you entertainment, feelings, pleasure, and fun/interesting stuff to talk about, as well as lenses into both past and current society
Oregon GOP governor candidate, Christine Drazan, promises to purge the Oregon State Board of Education and fill it with anti-woke MAGAs. "Curriculum in the classroom that is not age appropriate" is a dog whistle for anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-sex ed. This is anti-equality, neo-segregationist rhetoric.
I mean, why even bother adding the word "sciences" when he could have just said the administration is de-prioritizing life, period?
2. Remarkably, given how universally unpopular this would be, the intent seems accept the ruination of US health and medical research as collateral damage.
Everyone coming on my feed and explaining to me that all is lost, I note what I have noted before, that there are no Negro Spirituals entitled, “Welp, I Guess It All Sucks and I Am Giving Up.”
Excellent account of the doublespeak necessary to make it possible for researchers to agree to do the science of killing more people faster.
🚨Finally published: How does the US Military enlist AI researchers in war? @siree.sh, Lucy Suchman and I examine 7k US Military grant solicitations for AI research, and show how even "Basic Research" enlists researchers in a warfighting agenda. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
In rape culture, everything a woman says means yes and nothing she says means no. This seems to assert that though she said not to come over, said no repeatedly, struggled against Platner, an ambiguous prior comment constituted irrevocable consent. Not a shocking breach not to include it.
"she asked for it"
Did you know there are a bunch of big data centers right here in the Portland area? Join us for a bike tour next weekend to learn more, see them up close, and meet other activists. 🚲⚡💪 @350pdx.bsky.social @portlanddsa.bsky.social
Microsoft roadmap: -fire everyone -hit outlook servers with a stick -make a system file on your laptop grow to 500GB after updating -hit outlook servers with a metal pipe

@sakhavi.bsky.social Just gave an amazing paper at LIMITS about how software practitioners are well and truly done with the industry. Beautifully historicized, building on long traditions of mockery to sensitively think about ideological change. Well done! (but... full paper? can it go online?).
How am I not surprised that Ezra Klein is in bed with Peter Thiel.

It’s not hyperbole that part of what kept the queer liberation movement going in the Reagan era was the partying part of the “bury your friends in the morning, protest in the afternoon, and dance at night” schedule. Without joy there is no air left to fight
Fascism's a fever you break with shit like what happened in New York last night. Create more excuses to feel things like that together.
A better title for the Vanderbilt report on the humanities would be “God and Man at Yale Part II.”
This is a diabolically evil report. That is the only way to put it. Its objective is to reignite the culture wars using the imprimatur of both the university and prominent scholars so as to sow deep epistemic doubt about the humanities and hasten the project of killing us off entirely.
I got through a bit of this already notorious report, written by very prominent philosophers about the “decline of the humanities.” Everyone on this report is smarter than I am, yet none of them seems to understand what it’s been like to navigate the academy since the late 1990s.
EVs = they’re going to crash the grid!! Data centers = “let’s build 3,000 of them!”
UCL hosted an event about future-proofing anthropology. With the discipline embroiled in crisis, in what future do we not just slink away and do something else? I delivered a "letter” to anthropology describing what the world needs from our academic counterparts. medium.com/@dnafus/dear...
