I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

Dolly sort of represented a politics that was rooted deeply in the nature of the world and that was above transient politicians and political events. Kind of like Tom Bombadil.

i know it's like the one fact that everyone knows about her, but still: Dolly Parton sat down and wrote "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" in the same evening. That's a bigger contribution to american culture in a single sitting than almost anyone in their entire lives.
