#WIPSnips #WritingCommunity "moth" Twofer special: the moth gives me a very Thorn moment, and I promised @charliedeltawrites.bsky.social and @i-am-hildemar.bsky.social some kobold activity. This W is very, very IP.

Thorn began an arc through the woods, bearing a little north and a little east at first, the looming cliff to his left. It was not altogether out of sight in the trees, but it wasn’t easy to see, and he shifted his path a little westward. A moth started up from a gooseberry bush, and he followed it for a moment, waiting for it to alight, to discover a creature new to him, a tiny bark-mimic he would have missed if it had not flown. He studied it as well as he could without disturbing it a second time. Wondering what else might live in this forest, he started up a little rise and halted, startled.
Before him stood what seemed a two-headed animal, wolflike, but with dark brown eyes. A dog, then, though Thorn had known few, and certainly none with more than one head. The larger lower one regarded him solemnly, making up its mind about him. The upper, smaller, bared teeth. That head had a braided crest with a few feathers and beads worked into the long fur, which was redder than the coat of the bulk of the beast, and then Thorn blinked and his perception shifted. It was not a two-headed dog, but a dog with a dog-headed rider. Now he could see the shoulders of a figure like an Elf, but likely no taller than his knee and with such an unlikely set of features!

A few stores, like the realtor, showed a will to keep living in the old way as long as possible. There was a clothes store too, but the colonial store was boarded up, probably out of wares. Shame.
She decided to visit the clothing store before perusing the market area. She led the mare to the curb and fastened her to a fence post. The door swung open easily, but inside it was dark. An employee sat by the window, trying to read in the natural light.
“Good morning!” The girl said, “anything I can help you with?”
Malin thanked her with a smile. “That’s kind young girl; however, I just wanted to have a look.”
“That’s fine, I’ve sorted by price and by size. The first two rows are one gilded coin each, the third is two, and these over here are four and five gilded. Let me know if you need help with anything.”
“I will, thank you.” Malin walked over to the first row, seeing some clothes that might fit. She reached for a coat but was surprised by a moth flapping its wings around her, the coat was consumed by the creatures, lots of holes in the fabric. She put it back and continued down the rack.
In the end she found two pairs of trousers that should fit, and a few tops she could use. She counted six gilded coins from her purse and went to the girl to pay.
“Everything ok?” The girl asked.
“Except that some moths had eaten the coat I wanted, these seem good, I’ll take them.” She handed them and the coins to the girl, so that she could tally them up on her list.
“That’s a shame. Without lights and aircon moving the air around it gets stuffy, and the little buggers thrive in stuffy environments.”

I didn’t have a type. Kink compatibility was mostly the decisive factor for me. But I needed my boys to look like they wouldn’t snap in a strong breeze. I liked subs who could take the harshest of treatment and come back begging for just a little bit more.
Even then, I’d never claimed one as my own. Never wanted to. Mostly, my reputation preceded me and the subs I took home saw me as a challenge to be endured. An experience to tick off. I kind of liked it, partly because it didn’t lend itself to lasting relationships.
Most importantly, never had I had any desire to be anyone’s Daddy. Natural nurturer was just not in my make-up, and I was fine with that.
Tristan was exquisitely, delicately, beautiful, but so feminine. I’d never had a boy into makeup and jewellery and pretty things before. He was so slender there was a good chance I’d be able to make my hands meet around his waist. And he was young. Too young? Probably.
And yet, something drew me to him. He was pure light, which I guess made me a moth.
When he came back, he’d sorted out the smudged eyeliner and the swagger was back in his step. ‘Ok. Ready now, Steel.’
‘Good boy. You look beautiful.’
‘You think I’m beautiful?’ So much more shock than I’d expect from someone who looked like that. He must hear it all the time.
‘I think you’re exquisite.’
‘And you still don’t want to fuck me.’
‘And I’m still not going to fuck you.’
The brat fire flashed in his eyes as he caught the difference in my phrasing.
‘Ok. I can wait. What do you need me to do?’
‘I need you to tell me if you’re ok. And whether I have your consent to treat your injuries. And if you’re happy with kisses as rewards, because you’re going to need to be brave.’
‘Very happy. And yes, you have my consent for whatever it takes to treat me. I’m ok, thank you. I’ve pulled myself together and I’m sorry for the outburst. I’d like to say it won’t happen again, but it might and I’m really sorry. I’ll try my best not to.’
‘Don’t you ever apologise for feeling.’

Then a rush of wind nearly knocked her over as the huge thing landed. She crouched low and held an arm over her eyes, then opened them again to see just what in the world she was looking at.
It actually took her a while to figure it out; her brain kept seeing it as separate pieces for a few tries before it could believe that such huge things could actually be different parts of an even bigger thing: a wall shaped like an almond and covered in brown fur, six stalks as thick as oak trees that must have been legs like that spider-thing’s, ten pavilion-sized golden wings the shape of willow leaves, three eyes that each looked like clusters of melon-sized gems, and a long curly nose and four twitching antennae all as thick and long as saplings.
She was looking at a really big, weird moth. Seriously, *really* big.

I hoot at her.

She meets my eyes, and for a split second my heart stops at the idea that she knows it's me. Then, she closes the window.

Dammit.

I turn into a MOTH and go back to the windowsill. Any chance she left a crack open? I scout the window, but nope.

Second chance is my bathroom window. If I left that open, I'd be home free. But, no, it's closed too. "Grrrr," is totally not a noise a MOTH makes, but grrr.

#WIPSnips Aug 27 - moth From near the beginning of Chicory in the Garden! Chicory is very upset. He has a hard time dealing with change. But there’s a friendly moth who is trying to help him feel better!

Chicory sat on the branch, surrounded by spikes, and brought his knees to his chest. A few scratches bloomed with blood on his arms and shins. He hadn’t been flying very carefully. A moth had been sleeping in the shade of the blackthorn, and she woke at the sound of Chicory’s weeping. She flew to him, nuzzling beside his arm and telling him that it would be okay.
Of course, she had no way of knowing that it wouldn’t. It would never be again.

Once more hiding from the light of day. Fiona had become a tattered flag, burned and stomped on. But no one had done her any disservice. Her condition had manifested as the natural progression of events. The Lord giveth and He taketh away. And He punisheth thee for doing good deeds.
Well, her religious upbringing hadn't survived intact any more than her mind. So the Lord, the universe, or random fate could do whatever the hell it wanted.
After guzzling half of Hostetter's bottle of whisky, the rest of it pouring down her face and chest, she'd grabbed another from beneath the sink and shuffled around the house with moth wings scraping her stomach lining. She brushed her fingers along the surface of Hostetter's kitchen table, the table he'd built with his two calloused hands. At one end lay the gun oil can, the steel brushes, and the rag he used on his six-shooters. That isn't sanitary, she'd told him often, and he'd just as often told her that caring for his guns calmed him, especially in the light from the kitchen window.

The boy closed his eyes, and the girl did the same as the song of the Chrysillium trees washed over them. Azriel’s Grove. Her sister, the only living Shalik, created this grove five suns ago. At this hour, when the sky became a deep indigo hinting at the approaching dawn, the grove was empty.

Nearby, the lalos’ tiny azure wings created a hushed lullaby as they feasted on the sweet nectar of the makrial blooms. The bioluminescent flowers came alive at night, illuminating the forest floor with a rusty saffron glow and would soon sleep with the rising sun.

I grimace at his mention of moonmoths. I don’t care that they’re harmless insects merely migrating through the land toward their breeding grounds in the icy north. I don’t care that they’re smaller than my thumb, or that they’re completely defenseless. Moonmoth swarms are a menace; they worm their way through sealed doors and windows, trap themselves in our dwellings, and flutter uselessly against light fixtures or window panes, inexplicably drawn to the illumination. The flutter of their wings used to pull me out of the deepest sleep every bloody time. Even in death, when I no longer require slumber, their relentless flapping sets my teeth on edge.
Fortunately, it’s too late in the season for the moonmoth migration, but it doesn’t change my opinion of them.

She felt her eyelids flutter, like the wings of a moth desperate to evade the heat of the flame to which it had been so drawn. Then as quick as it came the dream dissolved into whiteness, and Dierdra’s eyes flew open. She was still at the doctor’s, still lying on the examination table, but her body felt stiff, as if she’d just ran a sprinted mile and had not yet recovered.

Mac's second landing at Stormbreak Medical went differently from the first. Competent signalmen guided him in using red and yellow ground crew wands, settling his aircraft onto a cleared width of parking lot designated in a white, chalk-sprayed helipad symbol. Almost as soon as his wheels struck ground, both cargo doors rolled open and Stormbreak medical orderlies bounded in. Without a word from Mac or Jarhead and ignoring all words from the newslady and her cameraman, they triaged and unloaded the passengers. The two men went out on stretchers. The kids were ushered to a nearby van with its side door hanging open. One orderly, the guy who appeared in charge, boosted up to Mac's pilot door window and shouted above the rotors for all he was worth, "Lift off! Airport! Tower on 114!"
"Have any other birds come in?" Mac yelled back.
"A lot of birds have come in!"
"In the last few minutes!"
"Sure! Airport! 114!"
"An Osprey?"
"Get off my LZ, man! I got another bird behind you!"
The orderly jumped down and hurried to the edge of the helipad. Mac, frowning, put power to his collective and glided back into the air.

My eyes inspected our perimeter, marked by three large pyres ready to burn. In the middle of the dusty ground the small fire by which I sat provided little warmth. From the west the wind was rising as the sun dangled low – a cold wind with the promise of snow. My eyes fell on the rolling clouds creeping close, dark they tumbled angry, blood red and bottom heavy.
In the middle of the sacred ground stood the crooked cross, blackened timbers charred and cracked. What was once thick cross-beams now stood stark against the sky, a symbol of our plight against what can only be called unholy.

"What’s this?" She turns it over in her palm. The selenite is a white disk carved with a stylized SYMBOL of the sun and moon, and I’ve put it on a black cord like the one Gram’s ring is on for me.

"Protection amulet. I made a few, but I don’t know if they work or not." I shrug. "Better safe than sorry."

"No, it’s a good idea. I should be safe, though." She rolls her eyes while she slips it on. "I did this when I was eight. How hard can it be?"

I step back as she pulls the lid off the Rubbermaid container of honey she brought and places it on the ground. "You think the bunnies will be interested if the pixnies aren’t?" I ask.

"Despite what Winnie-the-Pooh would have you believe, bunnies don’t eat honey."

"Are you sure? It seems like a pretty concrete source."

"You could totally use it in an essay to prove your thesis," Ren suggests.

"Oh, spare me! Was it 'Fimb's time"? Is that what you mean? To be crossbolted to death by an evil intruder? Was it?"

Jer frowned. "Maybe it was. Maybe if the intruder hadn't done it, a lion would have. Maybe he'd have miscast and been killed by a boar. Maybe he'd have been piping and walking and stepped off the Drop."

"Oh, to bare branches." It was like talking to a ... well, it was like talking to Jer. Cerel knew better. He took a breath, looked down at his carving. The Unicorn of Iryla. A symbol of faith. The very blessing he was trying to help Rush with, and here he was berating Jer for his devotion. But it just couldn't be that simple. One morning on a hunt with Bráthal
spewing his venom, and Jer would know it. He opened his mouth, and then closed it. Arguing would be pointless and squander what little time they had left together.

But when Xolotl came to right Smoking Mirror, Michael kicked him hard. With a yelp, Xolotl went over backwards into the water, dropping like a stone over a cliff.

Like the chasm off the ledge outside his house, the lake was bottomless, and it wasn't long at all before he was submerged in utter darkness. To fall too far was absolute death for a god, so he paddled frantically with his deformed limbs but kept sinking. He nearly panicked before remembering his dog-form was better for swimming, so he changed, but still he struggled against the eternal pull below him, beckoning him to oblivion. A part of him wanted to give up, wanted an end to the torment, humiliation, and pain that was his existence—had always been his existence, even before the angels came and ended the world as he knew it.

Eventually rationality won out and he broke the surface, gasping breathes to draw his teotl—his divine essence—back into his body.

A pair of strong hands dragged him ashore, drenched. "Are you hurt?" To his surprise, it was Raphael.

"He's alive, and he can swim," Michael spat. He looked around a moment, clearly trying to calm down. “Where’s Azrael?”

“He’s still working the survey, as you asked.”

Michael nodded, calmer now. “Then let's get going. I have much to discuss with Lord Death."

Xolotl cast a grudging glare at Michael's back as the archangel started off towards the palace. Someday you'll get yours, Michael. He turned away when Raphael narrowed his eyes at him. Someday....

“Hey, people gotta…” A girl’s head appeared in the doorway, and she paled. “Something wrong?”
Stella flashed her badge as he knocked one last time. “I’m Detective Stella Holden, and this is my partner Detective Steven Gregory. Is there someone we can call to get into this room?” Stella repeated her mantra to herself: Don’t get too many outsiders involved, and only give them the information they need. Giving people information they didn’t need often led to panic and chaos. When an officer is calm, clear, and direct, people will often comply basically due to shock. Having the police around is unsettling; it stirs fear, and people don’t respond well. Either they block or they help, and there usually isn’t a middle ground.
