#WIPSnips from Monah Bk. 1 -- using "crate" -- Four Sons of Faldor were disrespectful to Brigit's wife Megh while ordering lunch, and she decided to make them pay for it by adding some garlic to their goblets before serving them. #writesky #writingcommunity #queerwriters #writingprompts

The dining room was mostly empty when she stepped out with a large wooden crate. The only ones left were the Sons, and Brigit started collecting dishes and goblets from the empty tables. A smile crept along her mouth when one of the boys at the table started to groan.
“Oh, that’s awful.”
“We’ll not be coming back here again.”
“What’s the matter, Robert?”
Brigit recognized the pale one’s voice, and her smile broadened.

The word for August 5th is “carrier”

#WIPSnips - Demon King Daughter - Context: Part of Kiseki's introduction. Kiseki is a cursed. Masuyo can SEE curses, but has no ability to affect them. The 'carrier' is that little front-holder style like a reverse backpack. Masuyo has NO IDEA baby-Kyoka can do magic yet. Buy: pjccahill.carrd.co

"Thank you so much, Kiseki. It's fine. Here," Masuyo began simply, and moved closer, lightly hugging her arms around Kyoka in the carrier.
Kiseki nearly yelped, easing back a step. "N-no, please! I make babies very upset. I don't want to scare her!"
Masuyo did pause, but kept her smile. "Babies cry, Kiseki. It's okay. You wanted to see her, didn't you?"
Kiseki was caught, and Masuyo could see the darkness writhing tighter down her shoulders and spine. Her fear was feeding it, and the wretched thing was probably giving her terrible thoughts of awful outcomes.
Even so, the horror was an old friend of Kiseki's at this point in her life. A little glimmer of warmth gave her that spark of hope. Her trembling hand reached out. "C-could I just pet her hair? It looks so smooth and soft."
Masuyo nodded, and came close enough for the reach to be comfortable, angling her body so Kyoka could see Kiseki easily as well. She was deeply relieved that Kyoka, indeed, had no great fear of the darkness around Kiseki. Instead, she focused straight into Kiseki's eyes with that almost alien patience and intent.
Kiseki was paused by the gentle stare, but not out of shyness. It was the first time a baby hadn't burst into tears at the sight of her. Her eyes watered, and she tenderly brushed her fingers over Kyoka's hair.
"Oh," Kiseki gasped softly, tears dripping down her cheeks. "She's so soft and warm... Your daughter is beautiful, Masuyo."
Masuyo glowed happily. "She really is. Thank you, Kiseki."

The word for August 5th is “carrier”

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'pass' #BookQW #BookSky This is Dan Mackmain's first visit to Ireland. So many things look familiar, it would be easy to assume it isn't really any different to home. Dan knows better. He's been reading up on Irish folklore. The Green Man's Debt - 10th September 2026.

Cover art by Ben Baldwin for The Green Man's Debt by Juliet E McKenna. A grey wolf with pale eyes stands in the shadows of a derelict building with a black and white tiled floor. The wolf is looking straight at you. Its snarl reveals blood on its teeth and jaw.

Book extract reads: We were coming up to the bridge he had mentioned. It was as wide as the road through the town and built from the same grey stone. The ornamental balustrades reminded me of the fountain in the marketplace. I guessed the same mason had done the work.
The Defender’s high driving seat meant I could see over the balustrades as we crossed the bridge. The river wasn’t overly wide, but it was flowing fast. The water was too dark for me to guess at its depth. Rain running off those distant hills must pass through peat bogs before it joined the flow.
Back home, I’d have reckoned there was a decent chance of finding a naiad in there. The ones I’d met would love a river like this. I wondered who or what might have claimed these waters. I realised I hadn’t asked Eimer or Máirtín who or what would accuse a dryad and a sylph of trespassing. I decided to talk to Conn about that first. He’d know the best time to raise it. If we needed to raise it.

Today's word is PASS. Today's #BookQW from INTO THE BROKEN LANDS (DAW Books, Inc. 2022) a created world fantasy that is, like all of my books at heart, about self awareness. Who am I? How do other people see me? Can that body part be reattached? Do we stop to bury him, or do we go on?

DAW cover with crows and a ruined tower lower left. Digital cover with tentacles and a ruined tower lower right. Tentacles have escaped into the lower centre. It's not a squid.

Lyelee shifted forward on her seat as they passed beneath the gate, readying herself for the first glimpse of the city her ancestors had fled.
When the wagon emerged back into the sunlight, she stood, braced herself against the curved frame supporting the wagon's painted canvas top, took a deep breath, and looked around.
     There were no ruins

#carrier from Far Worlds, Book Three of the Lonely Ship Saga. So, the ship is called the Rune Carrier, so there's loads of these. Let's just keep going from yesterday's snip 😆 (Read Lonely Ship here! ewanstone.uk/110-2/) #writingcommunity #WritingPrompts #WIPsnips #spaceopera #erotica #nsfw

It had been a busy night for the Rune Carrier. Avalynne and the few of her crew that had not followed the Ultraviolet to the Core Worlds had thrown Vio a monumental party in the ship’s little mess hall. There had been singing and dancing. Drinking. Avalynne had done a lot of drinking. The rest of the diverse Rune Carrier crew, be they Accordites, remnants of the Infernal Order or the feline people of the Spaces Between, had been allowed to take part in the festivities. The Forge galaxy was wide and unknowable, chaotic and dangerous. But all were one in the glow of camaraderie. And the anima, the emotive energy that gave Mythmaker relics their power, had flowed like rivers of gold through their local space.
And Rune would get to experience the joys of a crewed existence from now until the dying of the stars, whereas Vio was stuck here in the Spire as its eternal custodian. His ship body, and indeed his elven frame, were both far from here in a place Vio had never seen before. He couldn’t spy them through the Spire’s subspace telescope. Not that he was bitter. Vio and Avalynne had had their adventures. They had spent thousands of cycles jet-setting about the Forge, righting wrongs and claiming treasures. Making friends, losing them. Loving and being loved. Rune had only just started her adventure with her own beloved, and Vio was happy and excited for her. Envious, yes. He would give anything to go back and relive those precious cycles alongside Avalynne. But Rune was young, his precious little sister, and she deserved to have those same experiences that he had already revelled in.

The #WIPSnips words for August 3 through August 9. August 3 - thrill; August 4 - box; August 5 - carrier; August 6 - froentier; August 7 - handle; August 8 - melody; August 9 - capacity.

G'morning #WIPSnips! Some banter between Milly and the lone staff member of the manor to stay behind while the school is in session. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompt

“Stone?”
“Unit of measurement, don’t worry about it,” Cook says as he slides a glass of orange juice towards me.
“Fair enough.” I eat breakfast in silence, savouring each bite. It’s exactly what I needed.
“Lunch isn’t for a few more hours, so if you’re not looking to interrupt the class, are you going to try out the thing from yesterday again?”
“No. I feel uneasy about something. Going to check out the treeline for a bit. Everything is still closed up tight, right?” I ask.
“Oh yes! I can open this back door right here, but nothing else. You good to go out alone?” His voice carries a lot of concern for my safety.
“I think so, with these new guns of mine,” I say, and I have to fight so hard not to laugh at his frown, and again when his expression changes to irritation when I hold up my arms and flex my fingers.
“Don’t get too cocky just yet,” he continues gruffly, “you’re only just scratching the surface of what a Draakkin can do!”
“Alright dad, but I still have to check the treeline for anything I find either suspicious or troubling, cause that’s my job,” I say with a smile and walk towards the back door. He unlocks and holds it open for me.

The word for August 5th is “carrier”

Carrier! The Falcons have a carrier ship called the Piranha. Here, Oryn describes his role in designing her. Bonus, it also contains the origin of my username! Bonus visual aid of Oryn. I did a sketch of him. Might as well include it! #WIPSnips

Both dragons turned to Oryn. The bluish green dragon shrugged. "I admit, I didn't think my love of space travel would ever be useful. I've read so many books on the subject. I knew as much about space travel as someone could without actually going to space. I had spaceship designs, dozens of them. When Trylok asked me for help, I pored over them, looking for the most practical designs that would serve us. Ships we could actually build. Ships we could use! I decided on two: space fighters—which we dubbed the Silver Falcons—and our carrier ship, the Piranha.”
"We also sought help from the other dragon tribes," Crystal said. "Shields, a power source, weapons. These were what our allies gave us. With them, we took the fight to the Verans."A drawing of a dragon, holding a DM screen that says "Houses and Humans."

I don't have "carrier" anywhere, so I used courier instead. From Death & the Dreamer: Soryl and Win discovering something interesting about Luther #WIPSnips #WIP #AmWriting #WritingPrompts #Writers #Writing #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #Fantasy #FantasySky #DarkFantasy #Necromancy

I wasn’t sure how I ought to respond. “Did you say Luther Glick isn’t dead?”
“I did indeed.” He lowered his voice, his eyes gleaming with gossip. “He was laid out in his parlor, and he sat up.”
I gaped at him. That certainly was not what I’d expected to hear.
The steward cleared his throat and resumed his Stoic Steward act. “The mistress Rosalyn was sent to attend him. I’m afraid she will be occupied until at least tomorrow afternoon. However, I can take the message and deliver it to her when she returns.”
“Fine.” I fished into my fake courier bag and produced the sealed envelope containing the note I’d written myself: Please enlighten me as to the trustworthiness of a woman called Tova.
