What happens when barriers unrelated to scientific ability determine who gets to do science? I wrote about accessibility, mentorship, and the experiments we may never know were possible in my new piece for The Node, The Experiments We Never Run. #DisabledInSTEM thenode.biologists.com/the-experime...

New on @the-node.bsky.social - an important post on the practical challenges faced by researchers with disabilities and chronic illnesses, and on how the #disabledinSTEM network supports this community to help overcome these. Thanks Alyssa for writing this. @disabledinstem.bsky.social

The advice I was given was to ask after being accepted. Basically make sure they definitely want before negotiating the accommodations you want. That being said, I’ve not yet had the chance to try this myself, so cannot confirm how well it works.

During my PhD I attended a seminar on where to go next with academic and research careers. I had one question: “are there any part-time postdoc positions?” I didn’t get an answer. That silence showed me just how big the barrier was for us with disabilities.

In a world full of greedy, cruel, predatory people… be a Dolly Parton. Embrace the good. Give back to the world. Care about literacy and marginalized people and leaving this planet a little better than you found it. RIP Dolly Parton. One of the greats.

NEW: The NIH is quietly restricting funding for research that evaluates how public policy impacts human health. According to internal documents I obtained, the agency no longer considers policymakers "mission relevant" — a massive shift for the biomedical funder. My latest for @nature.com:

NIH limits funding for research on the health effects of public policy

US biomedical agency no longer considers policymakers as ‘mission relevant’, leaving dozens of grants in limbo.

"Indies will save us" No! YOU WILL SAVE INDIES! Go leave a review for that neat indie game you like, share the trailer for an upcoming game you're anticipating, tell your fave developer they did a good job, go tell people about such and such game that's just come out, you can make a difference!

If you’re disabled and relying on someone who’s abusive for literal survival, please know you’re not alone. The lack of social supports and safety nets mean many of us get trapped in exceedingly dangerous situations. Forced to choose between help with food and meds or abuse.

You can become disabled or homeless in an instant. It just takes one accident or illness to change your life forever. It’s not a moral failing. You can’t just “try harder”. People need support, compassion and to have their basic needs met. That’s how you ensure survival.

As we recall the trauma caused by COVID in 2020, we should not forget COVID continues to harm. Many still suffer from Long COVID, people who mask are often harassed, and we haven’t scaled clean air infrastructure. If we truly acknowledge past harms, we should be working to create a better future.

Disability Pride Month felt quieter this year. A few years ago, organizations regularly reached out to highlight disabled scientists and talk about accessibility in STEM. This year, many of those conversations seemed to disappear. But disabled scientists and accessibility barriers didn't disappear.

look, I know that walks are good for my mental health blah blah blah, but how do I stop my mind from throwing every anxiety spiral thought about illness, grief, loss, death, pain, taxes at me while Im walking? Its like walking clears out the extant mess in my mind but it just fills up with anxiety.

If you, like me, just had a bunch of rain and your AQI didn’t go down as much as you maybe thought it would: AQI isn’t just particles, it is also a few gases. Rain is really good at removing particles, gases less so. Also if your rain came with lightning, it could’ve made more of the gases!

When I explain to peeps how much we do in research labs for how few $$, they simply don’t believe me. I once explained it to a famous person from Pixar, he looked me square in the eye and said “You mean all the cancer, vision, and Alzheimer’s grants work that way? You’ve gotta be %#ing kidding me!”

The NIH is an ENORMOUS bargain for the American people. Do folk think that private industry will do the background slog work for drug discovery for 250K direct costs?
