I can see why people love this; it was very hit and miss for me. When it's going, it's awesome, but drags in between those tense sequences. Hauer is a force of nature who owns the screen every time he's on it. Camera work is fucking great- some of those super wide shots especially!

Way back in 2012 I had one day to write an essay for Grantland about Star Trek:TNG's 25th anniversary. I worked on it all morning and didn't get anywhere. I almost gave up it, but then gave myself the most embarrassing pep talk ever: "If Patrick Stewart ordered you to do this, you would find a way."

He made it so. Sadly, #StarTrek #TNG legend Patrick Stewart has died, following a brief battle with Alzheimer's and dementia, as announced on his personal social media accounts.

Very sad to hear about Patrick Stewart. An actor's actor who did genre material, Shakespeare, and comedy, all with the same attention to craft and detail. From stage to I, CLAUDIUS to DUNE to X-MEN, with an extended stay in my favorite fictional universe, he was always worth watching.

"Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. But I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey, and reminds us to cherish every moment, because they'll never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we lived.” Farewell.

Even if it's done in a bit of a clumsy way, there's something worthwhile in a story that holds hope and positivity so close to its core in an age when everything is so cynical and negative.

I am so, so sick and tired of applying to positions through Workday. Every business has its own separate login, resume information is never ported over accurately, and as a result it does so little to save any time on the applicant's end compared to if the business did it themselves.

in case my meaning is unclear, by pointing out this person joined in Nov '24 the implicit corollary is "this person had never heard of Bluesky before Rachel Maddow told them about it, and their 'resistance' likely consists of memes and nothing more, they are a Facebook Grandma at heart" hth

And this is where I learned that the Vincent Price documentary has AI in it. That's where we're at, AI is spoiling Vincent Price. A man who there really is no shortage of footage of. Also, for the love of god, just let photographs be photographs. That they're frozen in time is the point.

Jesus fucking shitshow christ. Everything it reproduces from the game in a visual and design sense? Pretty good. Everything it changes, the writing, the new stuff? Painfully bad. This might legitimately be the worst movie I've seen this year. At least Doom: Annihilation was more fun.

So, wait, has NaNoWriMo rebranded as "Novel November", paid for by ProWritingAid, which used to be a spell/grammar checker but now is (you guessed it) an "'AI' grammar checker"--in short, yet another way for a griftslop machine to grab human-written text? Do I have that right?

I like a good horror anthology, and this one's particularly entertaining. Best of all is Carpenter's ghoulish host. He's similar to the Cryptkeeper but with a distinct flair to him that has more snark and less camp. Feels like someone just doing a bit for a Halloween attraction, in the best way.

i miss being mad about boring things

I believe that human beings are problem-solvers at our core, and the lack of curiosity that we have been convinced is appropriate is downright criminal. We live in such an amazing world filled with such wonders, and it feels like we can't focus on them.

Not a great movie, but enjoyably weird. There's a lot of neat stuff here in what amounts to a kind of American giallo, strangely Catholic in a lot of ways, with a supporting cast that is stacked. Burgess Meredith's character reminds me of one of our regulars at work.
