This column has been a long time brewing and I'm excited to share the first installment of it today! There's a lot that fails about these two movies- and a couple nuggets of good in there. It was a lot of fun to look at that and examine why they were doomed from the outset.

Getting real sick of slop midwives pleading for a 'respectful discussion' of AI as relates to the arts. Your use of AI to 'make art' is not respectful. It benefits from stolen art, destroys the planet, and does not make you an artist any more than someone driving 26.2 miles is a marathoner.
This is such an great feature (Rebecca is great!), and I've been thinking about it for a few days. IMO, "Influencer" in the ten-years-ago sense was really a LOT of jobs (spokesmodel/copywriter/etc.) but now it's morphing, at least in part, into "intentionally annoying person" which feels worse.

Ray Harryhausen didn't film his actors doing a choreographed fight with thin air and then use backscreen projection and double exposure to add an army of skeletons interacting with identical miniatures of the set and props just so you could tell me that AI is "inevitable." bsky.app/profile/ani-...

He animated the sequence by himself for more than four months -- without computers or even an easy way to check his work. He's a primary aesthetic influence of this trans new wave that we are seeing. These filmmakers are not copying him, but working alongside his aesthetic ideas in a spiritual manner (the fantasia of People's Joker, the Inland Empire-esque nightmare of CM2, Schoenbrun's dysphoric otherworlds)

The inbetweenness is welcoming & potentially synonymous to a quotidian low-humming dysphoria. A wrongness that many of us recognize
My politics are simple in that I believe everyone is deserving of housing, education, opportunity, healthcare, food and that anyone proposing “genital inspections” should be beaten until they’re nothing more than a stain on the cement.
I think "AI" plumpers should be happy I'm focusing mostly on the nonsense it's doing to my field, rather than how it's very clearly designed as a tool for the capture of wealth and capital by a bunch of accelerationist weirdos enthusiastically huffing their own farts from the depth of their K-holes

In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

I worked for New York’s largest medical center at the start of the pandemic. There were morgue trucks on the streets. They set up emergency medical tents in Central Park. Healthcare worker colleagues died. It is horrific that RFK Jr is on national TV lying that ICUs were empty.
my neighborhood 7-11 closed a couple years ago and tried to reopen but couldn’t get the permit approved because there’s a preschool next door and 7-11s sell alcohol (the previous permit was grandfathered in). i saw a fence going up around the lot recently and looked up what was moving in: a gun shop
