It’s real hard to convince voters that you deserve another term if they think that you’re not doing your job now. The lack of town halls, interviews with local press and constituent interactions doesn’t help.

Not only will 80% of students would reconsider their decision to stay" but fewer students will come to begin with--a great loss to US unlversities and US society as well as to the students themselves.

Yesterday the Trump admin proposed a fee of up to $100,000 that universities would have to pay for any foreign student doing post-grad Optional Practical Training, a program that lets some grads work for up to three years. For @immcouncil.org's blog I wrote about what this means.

@noamross.net on NPR this morning. www.npr.org/2026/10/09/n... "I am always enthusiastic about more investment into science, but you could think of this as someone planting a tree somewhere where THEY just burned down a forest. We've lost so much scientific investment under this administration."

After his university cutbacks, Trump announces $100 million for STEM researchers

The Trump administration is funneling $100 million into educating STEM researchers who are U.S. citizens. The move comes after other changes under Trump have forced cutbacks in university research.

There are over 900 major-party candidates for Congress this election cycle and less than 1% of them had a working-class job when they got into politics. My new book with Nick dispels some myths and explains why working-class people are underrepresented in every democracy in the world.

It's finally publication day for this decade-in-the-making book. @noamlupu.bsky.social and I explain why working-class jobs make up 70% of the average democracy's labor force, but only 2% of the average democracy's national lawmakers had working-class jobs when they got into politics.

Youngest kid’s soccer team is playing up this year and really wish there was a mercy rule for these games. The other team is an average of 6 inches taller and just stronger. It’s all good practice but it would be nice to for them to be competitive at some point.

Today would be a particularly great, long overdue day for the Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin - Madison to get up in front of microphones & explain to the public, voters, students, & their families that we are facing an existential crisis because of the GOP’s illegal federal funding cuts.

The IceCube neutrino detector has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in physics. The Trump administration has proposed slashing its budget in half in 2027.

you need to look to 2014 as an example of the bottom falling out for the president's party. the topline House loss looks small, but Dems that year lose: -9 senate seats and Mark Warner barely wins -3 governorships (including some blue state losses) -30! state leg chambers

Lots of talk since 2024 among certain consultants about how the Electoral College gets hopeless for Dems after 2030 when the "blue wall" Midwest states no longer have enough votes to deliver an EC majority. But all EC bias predictions depend on Texas being a close but dependable Republican state.

I did some back of the envelope Electoral College math and the GOPs advantage depends entirely on Texas. If Texas is no longer reliably red, the Dems have a clear advantage going forward

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

National Science Foundation Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress (Gift Article)

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

If you’re going to spend millions endowing faculty lines at public universities is a far better investment than spending colossal amounts of money every election cycle on candidates who will not win.
