When reality surpasses fiction! Top: fictional forecast for August 2050, broadcast by French TV in 2014 to warn about the consequences of global warming. Bottom: Real French forecast for yesterday, June 22, 2026.
I går rundede borgerforslaget 20.000 underskrifter.
New movement: altruist effectiveness. Goal is to use science to make people maximally altruistic, I envision our end being something like the Fordist mass person production you see in Brave New World. Thinking that virtue ethics should get its own galaxy brained public movement.

“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas and city center in 2021.”
Helsinki just went a full year without a single traffic death
The capital city is Finnish’ed with car-related fatalities.

In seven EU countries, aviation’s climate impact is now higher than that from cars. The growth in aviation emissions threatens to cancel out gains made elsewhere by EV uptake and jeopardise Europe’s successes. Check out T&E’s deep dive into the state of European aviation ➡️ bit.ly/4bNNbD0

even as denmark puts out statements asking the US to back off greenland, it won’t come out and directly criticize the US for violating international law in venezuela. it’s the typical western response: “maduro was bad and international law should be respected” but never stating who violated it.
I wrote this, please read! (As usual when I have a thing come out I'm acutely aware of its limits but fwiw I'm excited this is out. I learned a lot writing it. Also: JHI blog editors were incredibly rigorous and vigorous, made the piece better as object and the process of writing it more edifying!)
In an essay in the JHI Blog’s forum on political economy, Nate Holdren elaborates three levels of analytical abstraction at which intellectual historians invoke the term "political economy," turning our attention to the way that capitalism structurally conditions ignorance of the social totality.
Professional societies keep beclowning themselves buying into a lie about what an LLM "summary" is. They are inherently counterfeit: not an epistemic product of the ideas in the source, but summary-shaped text linguistically based on *other* works (in the training corpus) that use related language.
This is one of the reasons I remain horrified by seeing @historians.org suggest "ways to use gAI" that included this:

Am I the only one noticing that content *about* AI seems much more prone to AI-generated slop? Especially uncritical social sciences and humanities writing
I’ve been seeing this cover over and over and I just… In the original you’re aware of the horror of falling, but the body positions of the workers are solid on the beam. Here, most of them should be falling off, yet they don’t, because they live in an unreal, consequence-free space.
I guess it's fitting that it's a reimagined, worse version of someone else's artwork
