In this Patreon-exclusive episode, Talia and Emma discuss Gloria Steinem: her legacy, her place in the feminist movement, and her writings. They ask what it means to honestly reckon with feminism's history of transphobia and exclusion, as typified by Gloria Steinem's infamous essay "Transsexualism".

Out early on Patreon! Talia and Emma discuss Susan Faludi's "Backlash", a book on epistemic vandalism that catalogs how conservative and anti-feminist agendas are favored in media and culture. Finally, a good text that analyses societal misogyny and doesn't try to center men in feminism! ...Right?

i got a few chapters in and it just wasn't hitting, so it's good to know it stays Like That forever i was hoping for an insightful letter TO MEN about unlearning patriarchy, but it's to women ABOUT men, instructing us to be tolerant enough of abuse that men no longer feel the urge to abuse us :/

i think she has some interesting things to say, but it just doesn't feel like she LOVES women, or even particularly cares about the wellbeing of noncismen she loves MEN, and wants to find a way to convince/teach them how to love HER, specifically

"The Will to Change" is often recommended as a text that addresses men's concerns in feminist movements and elucidates how men benefit from participation in feminism. But is that actually the case? Emma and Talia discuss the text, and whether anyone reads the works they recommend!

this is why I say the comphet essay is one of the most important feminist writings bc she gets away from this fixation on the desire to be close to men and rather points out how material factors coerce you into being unable to say no to them, even the nice ones

similarly it also doesn't matter if some men are wonderful husbands and fathers. what happens to the family if he gets a TBI that completely changes his personality or he loses his job or fucking dies? stupid stupid stupid

a man being mean to women wouldn't really mean jack shit if he was in no position to hold his wife and children hostage you get me. hooks mentions abusive mothers as like a ding against radical feminist theory and I'm just like oh no! you forgot about youth oppression and why that happens!!!

when you think patriarchy is men being mean to women then it's extremely easy to "debunk" it bc some men are nice and it feminism becomes this touchy feely forgive your abusers slop vs acknowledging that abuse is enabled via power dynamics that privilege the patriarch

There's a chance that people might consider some of the things I say here to be excessively vicious. I want to emphasize that I consider the politics espoused to be so self-defeating, utterly without merit, and yet so ubiquitous and constantly reiterated that I have to repudiate them harshly.

The companion episode to our discussion of "The Will to Change" is now out on Patreon! Talia and Emma discuss Jacob Tobia's "Before They Were Men", an autopsy on 2010s-era trans activism that effectively demonstrates the moral cowardice of Western trans liberals and their politics of appeasement.
