Paying peer reviewers Interview with @danielgorelick.bsky.social about @biologyopen.bsky.social Fast & Fair trial in which peer reviewers were paid £220/review Spoiler: it works - fast, high quality reviews www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Why paying peer reviewers works, according to a journal’s editor-in-chief
A biology journal that paid peer reviewers found that the approach cut the time to a first editorial decision by 85% and maintained high-quality reviews.

I am absolutely in awe of this editorial laying out the details of the Company of Biologists publishing and financing models. Such a welcome air of transparency that is so rarely seen in any institution, doing wonders for building trust within the community. The CoB team are an absolute role model 🫡
"Why is publishing so expensive?" It's a question I hear all the time, so we at @biologists.bsky.social thought we'd try to dispel some of the myths around publishing economics & provide transparency around our costs. Today, we publish editorials in all 5 of our journals - links in the thread below.
Who is making jokes at scientific conferences? Which type of joke land? To find out, we collected quantitative data on jokes at 14 scientific conferences – now published OA in @royalsociety.org ProcB: doi.org/10.1098/rspb... w/ @rcorreia.bsky.social @andreasantangeli.bsky.social and more

In animals with large genomes, finding cis-regulatory elements can be very challenging. Enhancers can be located tens/hundreds of kb away from their target promoters. We face this challenge in Parhyale, with >3 Gbp genome. We just published a preprint describing how we are tackling this problem. /1
