All this Danny Thommo stuff makes me think of a family tradition we do every Boxing Day, and no its not all going stabbing lifeboats and intimidating lifeguards! Sorry longish thread as its a great story of actual heroes that should make us all feel patriotic.

[Opening scene is WESTMINSTER, LONDON. Over Downing Street a huge ALIEN SPACECRAFT hovers, silent, still, filling the whole sky a la Independence Day]. [Cut to INSIDE 10 DOWNING STREET. The (then) prime Minister DAVID CAMERON is looking out of his office window at the ship.] VOICE FROM OFF-SCENE, BEHIND CAMERON: Prime Minister… CAMERON [addressing the person behind him, still keeping his eyes fixed ahead in dread at the spaceship]: Yes? [We see the speaker is MICHAEL GOVE, then Education Secretary]: GOVE: Let me do it. CAMERON: For God's sake, Michael, you're the Education Secretary! You've never flown a fighter plane in your life! Here’s a thread of some of the more unusual or obscure aircraft to fly in Britain during the Second World War. Some were only intended as experimental or proof of concept designs, while others never progressed beyond the prototype stage.

I’ve worn a grubby RNLI cap for decades. I sound London, but I was born in Truro and I was a basically feral (Gen X) kid wandering the coast path with a dog until sunset for a lot of my early life. The lifeboats are in the fabric like trawlers and farms and pasties and fish and chips.
