"U.S. soccer culture still selects for income much more than we do for talent," Doug Andreassen, former president of youth soccer in Washington state — and former head of U.S. Soccer’s diversity task force — told @wlrnnews.bsky.social

Pay to play: U.S. youth soccer has an access problem. Can the World Cup help?

U.S. youth soccer has long been dominated by an affluent, suburban "pay-to-play" system that critics say limits player development compared to other countries — and which they hope the World Cup helps change.

One thing that irks me: people keep calling the folks on the streets in Minneapolis protestors. They are not generally there to protest, they are there to observe and document. This is the product of organizing and mutual aid. It is telling that these acts of citizenship are seen as protest!

Red Cup Day is Starbucks’ biggest sales day of the year. Customers across the country line up before dawn for free reusable holiday cups, marking the kickoff of the coffee giant’s most profitable season.

This year the event falls on November 13, and Starbucks Workers United, the SEIU-affiliated union, says employees across hundreds of stores in at least 25 cities will strike unless the company “finalizes a labor contract” beforehand (CBS).

More than 550 Starbucks stores have unionized since 2021, but negotiations that began in 2024 remain stalled. The union, representing over 9,500 baristas out of roughly 200,000 Starbucks workers in North America, has filed more than 1,000 unfair-labor-practice charges with the NLRB, citing firings, store closures, and bargaining delays. Starbucks denies wrongdoing, claiming it is negotiating “in good faith.”

According to Indeed, the average U.S. hourly pay for a Starbucks barista is about $15.75, while Reuters reports the company claims average pay “with benefits” comes to about $30 per hour.

BREAKING: After months of stonewalling by Starbucks, unionized baristas just voted 92% to authorize a ULP strike unless $SBUX finalizes fair contracts & stops union busting.

If forced, our baristas will strike in dozens of cities on Nov 13– the company's busiest day of the year.

“We have seen pigeons fall from the sky, shot down by drones. My nephews & nieces cried over them as if they had lost loved ones.” In Gaza, survival means union—even across species. We're bombed together, starved together, displaced together. We do not abandon each other, says Hend Salama Abo Helow.

Israel calls us “human animals,” never understanding that our bond with animals is the deepest proof of our humanity

Like all of us Palestinians in Gaza, our animals have been displaced, starved, bombed, and terrorized, yet we refuse to abandon each other
