“[…] when I think of new fields in science that have been opened, I don't think of interdisciplinary teams combining existing skills to solve a defined problem—I think of single interdisciplinary people inventing new ways to look at the world.”

I just gave a talk on interdisciplinary yesterday that features a call for interdisciplinary people and not just diverse teams of disciplinary types. Today I read this essay with delight. Viva antedisciplinarity. journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol...

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

It is sorta a funny thing about philosophy that the questions are inherently fascinating and exciting—there’s a reason people wind up talking about this stuff in dorm rooms—and the best methods we have for investigating them involve being as tedious and pedantic and boring as possible

I wrote this before the AfD’s victory. It is even more relevant now – especially since early reactions indicate that Germany’s democratic politicians are hellbent on doubling down on these mistakes. Warnings from the Struggle Against Trumpism. Some thoughts from the piece, on the day after: 🧵

Warnings and Lessons from the Struggle Against Trumpism

Lots of writing advice is about procrastination or writer’s block. We worry & develop routines to tackle it. But what if our problem is the opposite? What if we write too much? Too many emails, posts, essays, papers. We have become very good at making ourselves write, perhaps too good. 🧵

It is official now: the new UN report finds we'll cross the 1.5 degree warming limit very soon. Now what? Two months ago we described the range of plausible climate trajectories ahead in this article (open access). In short: it's like we're stuck in quicksand, where only an active pull can free us.

We are in the Age of Humans - the Anthropocene. Our new article (open access) shows how even with a moderate future emissions scenario, global temperature will still be elevated by 3-4°C in the year 3000! Lifetime of our CO2 in the air is that long. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...
