This week on Off Panel, retailer Katie Pryde @omgkatiep.bsky.social from the Eisner winning comic shop @bkswpicspdx.bsky.social joins the podcast to talk about the ComicsPRO experience, the upcoming 10th anniversary of Books with Pictures, how things are at the shop, managing the moment, and more.

Do you remember that time Pence tried to see Hamilton and the cast called him out. Or when McConnell was chased out of a resraurant and not allowed a peaceful meal. Or when Cruz abandoned Texas during the deep freeze and we shamed him into going home. That. Do that.

Wheels up for Burbank. LA friends & family, my schedule is busy but I’d love to make time for a bite or a drink. ComicsPro pals, I can’t wait to see your faces. My body is cranky but my heart is yours.

My parents got together as teenagers: here, it is 1972, Nixon was still in office. My dad was scorned for his “long hair,” my mom is wearing a shirt that says “vote” even though she wouldn’t be able to for another two years.

A colorized photo of two white teenagers, a young woman wearing thin-rimmed glasses and a shirt with the word “vote” with stars, and a young man wearing a wide-collared button-up shirt and fluffy dark-brown hair. She is smiling with full teeth, his lips are closed but one corner of his mouth is smiling.

I have rarely tittered so much and so consistently at the joy of creativity and ingenuity and teamwork and just dogged perseverance as I did tonight in the cinema at @hundredsofbeavers.bsky.social It’s going to be talked about in film courses forever. The amount of inspiring it will do

Well. I did it. I submitted my book on the history of how the US government has removed Indigenous children from their families. From colonization to removal to boarding schools to today. For middle schoolers. I think it's the first book of its kind. I can't believe I got to do it.

Normalizing spelling out what people actually mean when they cite DEI rather than letting them hide behind the safe cover of a euphemism that's been sapped of meaning

When the Patriot Act was passed, libraries got requests for patrons’ borrowing history. We were prohibited from disclosing those requests. We deleted and shredded those records and stopped tracking reading history for that reason. ALSO.

I mean, literally, the answer to this is "I am federally prohibited from telling you anything about my students without a subpoena or judicial warrant; if you have a subpoena or judicial warrant, please submit it to [Legal Officer/Office] to ensure it is in compliance with all relevant federal laws"

If you have students who are trans no you don’t. If you have students of color who may be affected by ICE no you don’t. If anyone asks you gender or racial the makeup of your class you don’t have to tell them. Protect your class and protect your students by not complying in advance. They trust you.

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent. Opportunities are everywhere. Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉

One of the best things you can do right now is read books. Buy them. Borrow them from the library. Gift them. Read history. Read fiction. Read science writing. Read anything that shows you the world is bigger than what fascists say it is. Read to remember why your resistance matters. 📚💙

I don’t care if you’re a relative, a fantasy novelist, or an elected official, transphobia is manufactured outrage and transphobe are trash. None of America’s problems are cause by trans people. None. But a LOT are caused by bigots.

Hello, all. In a time where everything is so much for so many people, I feel guilty asking but my family and I are in need of help. Even if it is a signal boost, any help is appreciated. I love you all, and I hope you are all safe. gofund.me/980022e5
