Our owls are back! It seems a bit early for the Fall, but there were definitely at least two if not three Great Horned Owls hooting away during our morning dog walk today.

We created this guide for anyone who could experience a miscarriage in a state with abortion restrictions. We wrote it in consultation with dozens of doctors, including those who regularly treat patients who are miscarrying 👇
If You’re Pregnant, Here’s What You Should Know About the Medical Procedures That Could Save Your Life
Women experiencing pregnancy loss in states with abortion bans told us they wished they had known what to expect and how to advocate for themselves. We created this guide for anyone who finds themselv...

@faineg.bsky.social, they’re starting them on Bluesky earlier and earlier (poster from a middle school classroom door)
hospitals want us to do more with less without a concern for patient safety or our own wellbeing while refusing to pay us adequate wages
Stop Saying There's a Nursing Shortage
The U.S. may have less of a shortage of licensed nurses than a shortage of nurses who are willing to work in bedside jobs that have become increasingly demanding.

NEW: Four professors with the AAUP are suing the Texas A&M University System over its policy barring discussions of gender, race and sexuality in classrooms. They're represented by the ACLU of Texas. Story pubbing shortly: www.aclutx.org/app/uploads/...

Bluesky's nuclear block supports a culture of consent. Each user can completely prevent another user from having any access to them on this site. Right wing harassers on X hate consent. They hate being told "no." They hate not being able to force their posts onto others and target others.
Antonio Ingram, Senior Counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund “unelected Chancelors + Board of Regents are implementing a vision for higher education not mandated by Senate Bill 37…we are here to call out the harms professors + students are experiencing under the guise of SB 37 implementation.” 👏

It’s Monday and time for Jury Duty! Let’s see what the judge says when I tell him I’m willing to serve, but that I have a conference presentation overseas next week.
Time to add another formerly respected institution to the garbage pile, this time @aau.edu, which just worked with the Trump admin to endorse resegregation in high education, embedding MAGA fraudsters as faculty, and banning student expression. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
There is no version of yourself you could become that would satisfy the people who hate you. So you might as well be who you are.
Starting work on Sunday Dinner! This dinner inspired by a clearance on one of my favorite flavors of Stove Top. We’re having Maple-glazed Stuffed Roast Pork, Roasted Broccoli with Lemon and Parmesan, and Mixed Rice with Black Beans.
Son is getting some basic cooking skills lessons from me this summer, so that he can “level up” his cooking skills and also so he can help me with food prep. Today we learned peeling.
In a few weeks, I’ll be traveling overseas to present at a conference with my research collaborator from the Netherlands who I have never met in person. I know they’re vegetarian and enjoy food and cooking, and they’ve enjoyed the gumbo recipe I sent them.
Son decided he enjoys escape rooms so he asked for an Angry Birds themed escape room for his birthday party. Given that doesn’t exist anywhere near, husband has created a cross between an escape room and a LARP with an Angry Birds theme for tomorrow’s party. Husband is good at this sort of thing.
I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
Got some “getting to the end of summer” treats at The Baked Bear, a build-your-own ice cream sandwich shop
Son’s orthodontist has sponsored an open play night at a place that can be best described as a human habitrail. It is massive, also contains a ropes course, multiple slides, a ball pit, bumper cars….it’s loud in here. He’s having a great time
trans rights frankly is a top 5, potentially top 3 issue for me despite not being trans and not having any trans family being bigoted against trans folks not only hurts my trans friends and every trans person but is so predictive of further bigotry
All I want is quiet competence from the CDC and FDA that allows me to eat salads without fear of live-action role playing Oregon Trail's greatest hits
Good-faith concern on this issue would be going, "hmm, professional sports leagues should probably have some standards in place to ensure trans competitors aren't getting an unfair advantage," googling for 5 minutes, realizing every sports league already has those standards and dropping it.
i don't believe anyone has "good-faith" concerns about trans women in sports in 2026. there's been too much time to hear the actual evidence, the actual people affected, and the role the debate plays in attempts to purge trans people from American life. anybody picking that side has made a choice
Got a goodie to assist in decorating my new Renaissance Faire staff.

The personal climate footprint framework is a strategic distraction from going after the fossil fuel industry and other major sources of greenhouse gases. Too, chickens are trivial business compared to cows, let alone to Andy Burnham's apparent decision to go after North Sea oil.
Big oil coined ‘carbon footprints’ to blame us for their greed. Keep them on the hook | Rebecca Solnit
Climate-conscious individual choices are good – but not nearly enough to save the planet. More than personal virtue, we need collective action

the fight/don't fight axis remains the most important fault line in democratic politics, and that the moderates have mostly failed to find any way to take the 'fight' side is why they are getting their asses handed to them in primaries right now
This is why DSA candidates are really taking off now instead of eg in 2020 or 2018 www.gelliottmorris.com/p/2026-07-07...
