Texas isn't a red state. It's a state held hostage by gerrymandering and voter suppression. Hell, earlier this week they announced they're shutting down half the voting centers in Tarrant County (that's Fort Worth, 2.2 million people) and kicked everyone out of the hearing who wanted to comment.

This is a sentimental essay about politics, which I know isn't the fashion, and yet the editors at @newrepublic.com let me write something personal about the Lone Star State. Link in the replies.

I was appalled (though not surprised) when I learned Sunday that Senate Dems intend to help Republicans fund the government through the election, with one minimal concession that has nothing to do with election subversion or ongoing Trump theft of federal dollars from blue states. And I remain so.

Senate Democrats Dodge Last Pre-Election Opportunity To Fight Trump

They won't take a big stand to protect the election, or resist Trump's broader lawlessness, before the midterms.

If you're scared about being the only person wearing a mask, I can tell you that most people do not care. I've been masking for the past 6 years. I've travelled to several different countries in that time. I've never had Covid and I've endured a handful of snarky comments at most. Be brave.

If you haven't been masking, give it a try. What do you have to lose? Just wear one in crowds and on planes, trains, and buses. Find a style that fits, so you don't futz with it. You don't have to get sick all the time.

That said, don't overlook a much smaller but significant box-office phenomenon: The proshot of Hadestown grossing $18 million--more than Hamilton made--feels like a very clear and positive statement about the viability of these straight-from-the-stage special events. Expect more.

Not the most important thing here, but why don't NC, SC, GA, FL count as "the coasts." All four states are on the coast. TX, LA, MS, AL are coastal states too, but the southeast states are on a main ocean coast. Looks like just another way to say red/rural = real & good; blue/urban = fake & bad.

I really hate Elissa Slotkin's patronizing "my theory of the case is that what works in the middle of the country will work on the coasts, but not the other way around" shit. It's one of her canned lines that she uses in her eventual attempt to run for president.

Here's my theory of the case: If Democrats can figure out how to win in the middle of the country, we can make it work everywhere else. But what works on the coasts does not automatically work in Michigan, in lowa, in Ohio. So we've got to figure out the middle first.
That is why I have been spending time in the middle of the country, in purple and red places. I've been talking with folks who voted for Trump about how they view things and what they're looking for in new Democratic leaders.
And I want to say something about the Democrats organizing in tough places.
These are people doing the hard work in red places, being good Democrats when it's hard. It is easy to show up where everyone already agrees with you. It is something else to show up where they don't, and do it anyway, because you believe it matters.
I believe it matters. And I am going to keep showing up in those places. I hope you will too.

No one in this entire administration follows laws or court orders, so the solution cannot be more laws or more court orders. We have a bad system, where you can’t remove a lawless executive & stop his underlyings from committing crimes without using a mechanism that has <never> worked in 240 years.

And I wanna be clear that the “they’re not supposed to be fucking doing that” comment of mine I guess describes what they just do in the trump-vance era now; advocates and lawyers argue this is illegal in many instances. They don’t care. And have been just doing it for a while now

NEW: Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, facing ethics inquiries for misconduct, has threatened to strip state scholarships from Catholic schools unless the Church rewrites its vaccine doctrine. It is an unprecedented attack by an American state on the religious liberty of the Catholic Church.

Florida’s MAGA Attorney Threatens to Defund Catholic Schools Over Vaccine Mandate

Florida’s attorney general gave the bishops until August 7 to accept vaccine exemptions their own doctrine calls dishonest. Nearly nine in ten of the state’s Catholic school students sit downstream.
