There is a certain level of obtuseness in (some) "AI" apologists when they flounce up to point out what "AI" is good for in science, etc, while eliding the fact that almost none of that use is driving the current market capitalization, environmental degradation and resource hogging of the field

Hey I’m writing about this show as a frequent Chuck Lorre enjoyer (yes, including BBT). If you want to ride along and see what becomes of this strange sitcom foray into premium cable, please do— we’ll be taking it seriously but critically, exploring all the questions it raises about TV in 2026.

Any time @donnadb.bsky.social takes on weekly reviews of a TV show, it's an event in my opinion. Whether or not you watch Stuart, there's a lot to savor in this review of the series premiere. (First one's non-paywalled, subscribe for more.) www.episodicmedium.tv/review-stuar...

Skimming is a vital skill! So is close reading! Deploy them each where appropriate! Do them with your human brain! Teach them to your students—mine are astonished and empowered to learn there’s more than one “approved” way to interact with a text.

Marie Claire actually left a prompt from an AI in one of their recent articles. While there’s still some great journalists and publications left, this is utterly shocking. No wonder I’m trying to pivot.

we hold our auction over the 4th of July because patriotism is complicated in this country (as it always has been) but I truly, in my heart, do love the best parts of it. I love how vast and chaotic we are, how we have every biome, every culture, every climate, every dream. we are a daily discovery

seeing the posts about visitors discovering that you can walk around most of our cities and just be yourself in a multicultural setting, discovering tailgating, starting impromptu block parties, my muslim mayor, etc. etc. it's corny to say it but that's our secret sauce. and it means something

People who want to outsource the “boring” parts of research or academic work to genAI need to think about how much their life and thinking is enriched — even changed! — by stuff that wouldn’t have ever come up if they had managed to avoid that so-called “mindless” work. 1/

Every year my wife teaches a film appreciation class that doubles as a “wider vision of the world” class. She nearly always begins with PERSEPOLIS, which encapsulates so much of what she wants to get across to those central Arkansas college sophomores. Such a storyteller, such a loss.

Breaking News: Marjane Satrapi, the Iranian-French author whose graphic novel series “Persepolis” illuminated the struggles of Iranians during the Islamic Revolution, died at 56.

One of my strongest takeaways from the Bee this week is that it was a showcase for why critical thinking matters more than ever. So much of what the kids do up there isn’t rote memorization—it’s using their insane prep to solve words like puzzles (using etymology, patterns) in real time.

Great feat and congratulations but as a skill it is less necessary in the age of AI and automatic spell check. Kinda like the multiplication tables.
