i was charitable enough in those days to assume that elected politicians and professional journalists were simply stupid and ignorant, rather than pretending to be so for their own benefit. This is no longer the case

this line of argument reminds me (a wizened crone) of when the cops were accused of institutional racism, and I found myself having to explain the difference between saying a person was racist and that an institution produced racist results
