Bet you didn't know that the Little Morton Salt Girl is an immortal being who existed before there was life on Earth.

“While everyone was safe in the end, the class did experience quite a scare and underwent unnecessary interventions. State and federal health officials conducted a subsequent investigation to figure out how a dangerous pathogen was stored in the same freezer as harmless bacteria for lab classes”
College lab class ends with 32 people on antibiotics for deadly germ exposure
Lab students were supposed to ID a mild germ. They all identified a deadly pathogen.

"Authoritarianism doesn’t have to involve men in suits dragging people into cars...Orban showed that critics — or pockets of independence — can be rendered pliable by making them believe that the smart move is to affirmatively sacrifice some of their independence" @yale.edu wapo.st/3RW4HPo

A lesson from Hungary: Boards don't capitulate to authoritarians. The people on them do.

Studio execs are going to want to adapt more poems for the big screen now
Figuring this out in sufficient detail and clarity, not writing the code, is actually the hardest part of the task.
Coding will always be hard because you have to know what you want the computer to do.

1/ The world's songbirds sing in just 8 basic sounds. And where a bird lives decides which ones it uses. My first PhD paper is out now in @science.org (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aee6239) Here is what we found:
Every PhD student and supervisor knows that it’s hard to predict exactly how long it will take to complete a thesis This 4 year limit is stupid, dumb and will make the US less attractive for students www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Embarrassed and furious that many Dodgers are at the White House right now. It’s a stab in the back to Los Angeles and their fanbase. Their ownership group should know better. Shame on them. Credit to Mookie and Kiké for opting out.
I explicitly tell prospective students to do this for my lab!
New idea: Students interested in joining a lab get reference letters about the PI by former trainees.
the best day for the presidents of every R1 to hold a press conference screaming that higher ed is our second largest export and destroying it is economic sabotage and soft power detonation was Jan 21st 2025. the next best day is tomorrow.
a bad thing is running a phd program with brilliant international students who must reckon with a volatile xenophobic saboteur government in fresh ways every day, no thank you, 0/10
I wish I did not have to bring up this old tweet from ‘that other place’ every now and again but here we are (again) and here it is…
We really need to retire that phrase. How about the "Biologically Bangin' Billion", or "Boomin' Billion" or "The Acritiferous Age", or "The Eukaryeon" or the "Stem Eukaryote Diversification Interval" (SEDI)" or... *gets pulled off stage by a shepherd's crook*
Apparently the "boring billion" was actually exciting! We provide molecular evidence of complex Mesoproterozoic eukaryotic communities. So happy to see this out 🥳 Thanks to @phoebefossil.bsky.social , Hélène Morlon & @fburki.bsky.social for a lovely collab! doi.org/10.1073/pnas...
Furious that Chris Nolan would disregard historical accuracy in adapting The Odyssey by making a "movie" with "cameras" instead of memorizing the entire story and then going on a nationwide tour to sing it to us while tripping on ergotized barley
Does the NCAA have AQI standards for practices and games and if not this is another great reason college athletes should be unionized

it's not an own to point out that all these fucking guys trying to deny trans people their hormones are so into HGH and whatnot. they don't care either way about 'gender affirming care.' they want to be he-men and they want trans people to die. to them the two projects are perfectly coherent

Most of the federal agency science budgets goes into the salaries of students and trainees, and the decision to take that money and instead give it to industry and already rich venture capitalists is fundamentally a decision to have many fewer scientists and do far less science in the future.

I think a lot of people - especially more biology-oriented students- encounter them in intro chem and experience them as arbitrary rules rather than a way to understand what is and isn’t knowable
🤦♀️People, please, we teach the concept of Significant Figures in undergraduate for a reason. We repeat it several times in graduate school. So why are you still reporting precision that the instrument can't produce? These numbers are actually straight-up miningless in some cases. #AcademicSky
