i've been thinking recently about why i have a reflexive dislike of the 'comedy needs balance' line, and i think it's because political comedy is the act of saying "hey, you're not mad, the world really does look like THIS", and that doesn't need "balancing" because *the rest of society* does that

Apparently the unacceptable bit is not that 24 people died
The images coming from Ceuta are unacceptable. We cannot allow anyone to come to our Union without abiding by our rules. Dangerous crossings must stop immediately. Smuggling networks must be dismantled. And returns must be swift, as our rules allow.
Aleksander Čeferin has been elected Leader of the Avignon FIFA and taken the regnal name Clement VII.
The standard four-stage strategy as laid out in Yes Prime Minister: Stage 1. We say nothing is going to happen. Stage 2. We say something may be about to happen, but we should do nothing about it. (1/2)
I'm not qualified to judge whether such people are psychopaths. All I can say is that they behave as if they are. From today's Telegraph.
The new Prime Minister is writing a "10-year plan" for the UK. The arts & culture MUST be part of it. I've signed @campaignforthearts.org's petition urging @andyburnham.bsky.social to revitalise the arts – to revitalise the whole nation 🌱 Join me: www.campaignforthearts.org/petitions/10-year-plan/

[AFTER KEIR STARMER RESIGNS] ME: PAL: ME: PAL: Lot of human rights abuses for a hu- ME: A LOT of human rights abuses for a human rights lawyer!
In the end, there were just a lot more human rights abuses than I was expecting from the human rights lawyer.
England and France ending their World Cup v Argentina ending theirs
Brutal photo caption from The Guardian: “Gianni Infantino carefully explains to Donald Trump that he is not part of the Spanish national team.”
Trump even managing to embarrass Infantino by refusing to let go of the trophy and get out of the picture, like the child at a birthday party who won’t hand over the gift
I sort of treated the red card for Argentina like a goal for Spain and for a second got confused we were having extra time
What would actually happen on penalties: Argentina player ignores the ball and pushes over the keeper unprovoked
funniest outcome I think is it goes to penalties and spain win bc messi misses

I’m so confused about how much work - or appearance of work - has been done to make Shakespeare studies less elitist, yet one of the biggest conferences remains *invitation only*. I’m not trying to be shady, I’m just genuinely confused as to how delegates who otherwise espouse fairness justify this
The fires in Ontario - like so many others - demonstrating viscerally how climate change perpetuates the displacement and dispossession of Indigenous peoples, who have least contributed to emissions and over and over again put their bodies on the line to prevent fossil fuel development.
These images of First Nations community members evacuating Collins, Ontario on motorboats are absolutely surreal www.facebook.com/reel/1548244...
