Coming to Vancouver for #AAS2026? If travelling light, I highly recommend taking the Skytrain directly from YVR airport to conference site (and nearby hotels). Only $10 CAD, clean, comfortable. Takes only 30 mins and way cheaper than taxi or Uber. 2 zone fare, get off at last stop, 5 min walk.
wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage
I do not like your AI slop I do not like it, make it stop I do not want an AI house I do not want an AI mouse No AI box. No AI fox— That AI slop can go kick rocks I would not AI here or there I would not AI anywhere No AI car, no AI czar Your AI slop is killing trees I do not like it, let me be!
Maybe, if you're not actually in university classrooms, teaching students in the age of gAI, perhaps you might want to stop and listen when people actually in those classrooms raise concerns about what they are seeing; and not just dismiss us as luddites, or boomers, or cruel profs playing cops
Professional societies keep beclowning themselves buying into a lie about what an LLM "summary" is. They are inherently counterfeit: not an epistemic product of the ideas in the source, but summary-shaped text linguistically based on *other* works (in the training corpus) that use related language.
This is one of the reasons I remain horrified by seeing @historians.org suggest "ways to use gAI" that included this:
#PhilJobs #HPS TT Assistant Professor in Philosophy, Trinity College Dublin AOS: History, Philosophy & Ethics of Science philjobs.org/job/show/30601 Great this job ad explicitly mentions *geosciences* as one of areas of sciences of interest. (I have asked PhilJobs to include a box in this area)

This book is interesting. While it no doubt furthers the case that print had a major impact during the Song dynasty(960 to 1279), when it was adopted by the state and state actors, a couple of areas were completely unexplored. For ex, not a single surviving material text is discussed.
Everyone always proposes this as the answer without understanding that an oral exam requires very different skills than a closely argued research-driven essay. If you want to argue those skills don’t matter, then fine, argue that, but don’t pretend that oral argumentation is identical.
Across the country, a small but growing number of educators are experimenting with oral exams to circumvent the temptations presented by powerful artificial intelligence platforms such as ChatGPT.

i am going to say something very mean if you cannot handle footnotes, it is not that there are too many footnotes, it is actually a you problem
Wikipedia is hands-down one of the most authoritative, accurate, transparent, & full-cited informational sites in the observable universe, and has been since like 2015. And no, you don’t “use it as a source,” just like you don’t use Google as a “source.” It’s a source of sources. You scroll down…
Like my college professors on both the undergrad and graduate level, I am not going to take wikipedia as a source. Its no more reliable than asking Chat GPT
Such an excellent book, great to see it out as paperback!
