EXCELLENT: The Netherlands new OA policy seems to be well thought through obc.copim.pub/when-scaling... Policy explicitly recommends redirection & reallocation of funds from existing ‘big deal’ budgets towards community-driven alternatives, incl university-led diamond OA & Netherlands Uni Presses

When 'scaling small' becomes national policy

The Netherlands' new open access strategy echoes the principles the Open Book Collective was built on - 'scaling small' and community-led publishing

One of the many tragedies of AI in higher education is that students think that they have to cheat and plagiarize because their peers are doing it already. In my (non-representative) sample of undergrads, 50% of them flat-out detest what AI has done to their education

Lakis Polycarpou@lpolycarpou.bsky.social · 4w ago

If you *are* there for knowledge, the incentive structure works heavily against you if it’s possible for everyone else to cheat without consequence. I suspect that most students hate this as much as their professors do.

My moderation shift. This was not sophisticated forgery but even with low effort it's child's play with LLMs to make something that looks like a real paper to a quick skim. And we don't go around accusing people without being sure. So I wasted a chunk of time on the first before I noticed the others

Someone went to the trouble of creating 5 fake OSF accounts today, linking to 5 fake ORCID accounts, and generating 5 fake papers to submit to SocArXiv, with fake author and emails. Dude, if you are reading this, I hope you get the help you need (or a better job).

Abstract
Customer support teams play a crucial role in ensuring service quality in financial services
enterprises, and the rationality of their staffing directly affects customer experience. This study
analyzes the relationship between staff size and service quality indicators, focusing on the
configuration characteristics of customer support teams. Based on 18 consecutive months of
operational data from the customer support center of a financial services enterprise, the sample
includes 96 service teams, 2,430 customer service personnel, and over 3.2 million customer
service records. Service quality is measured by average response time, first-time resolution rate,
and customer satisfaction score. A generalized 1

Abstract
Public transportation systems have high requirements for service on-time rate, and the
rationality of dispatcher scheduling directly affects operational stability. This study analyzes the

Indeed. There is a paper to be written on how journalists make deliberative politics less probable by routinely framing changes of party/politician policy positions as "climbdown", "flip-flopping", etc.

David Colquhoun@davidcolquhoun.bsky.social · 7mo ago

Seems to me to be a case of gotcha journalism (not least from #NickRobinson and #BBCR4Today ). Which is preferable? 1. Starmer proposes a policy, listens to reactions, and modifies policy accordingly. 2. Starmer pushes through policy ideas, even dubious ones, and ignores all criticisms of them.

'The central goals of open science – transparency, social accessibility, robustness – apply across all disciplines.' In a recent interview, Dr Eike Rinke discussed the importance of open research in improving the quality of research in higher education: open-science-future.zbw.eu/en/shift-tow...

"The shift towards more robust research is primarily a social change."

Open science is a social change and spreads primarily through communities and networks. Networks offer exchange, social recognition, ...

Your regular reminder that the position to only make "the data supporting the findings of this study ... available upon reasonable request" is not (usually) itself reasonable. (Ugh, when will this practice finally end?)

Do you have recommendations for people who are interested in / have spoken about the problems (practical or ethical) of using AI in social science research? They need to be UK based. I am organising a panel for an event. Thank you so much!
