That sounds like we need one new political party and one new candidate for Wisconsin governor.

I’m not sure whether this is just a psychological difference or AI bros fundamentally don’t understand the nature of an artistic experience, but: I don’t want a personalised film/book/podcast. I want to see/read/hear the same one as everyone else, so I can read reviews or discuss it with my friends
Reality check: "Women's hard won rights": - did NOT include defining women by biology, the slogan was "biology is not destiny!" - did NOT seek sex segregation, they fought for inclusion of women - did NOT advocate "sex-based rights", they fought AGAINST that and FOR equality regardless of sex
So many people have been affected by this and if there isn't a good way for people to find their way back we are in a lot of trouble.
Here’s the thing: I like Hank Green. I think the work he’s done has been a net good for humanity, and represents some of the best case for what YouTube can actually be used for. I hope he figures this out, takes some time to reset, and gets back to it in a healthier, more grounded way.
Just saw an interesting production of HAMLET where not only was Hamlet followed around by a chorus of Hamlets turning his monologues into verbal battles, but each of the lead actors took a turn as Hamlet as the show went on. As confusing as that sounds, it led to some transcendent moments...
I used to do some work on the ethical use of satellite and drone imagery for aid and disaster response, and it is genuinely hard to express in words what a dangerous, stupid thing Google is doing by making it easy to use GenAI to create faked satellite imagery:
How to plant a nuclear plant in Iran
The question is: what on earth is Google doing?

I am absolutely gobsmacked. And trying not to pass out from hyperventilating. Thank you @barackobama.bsky.social — you just made my secret dream for DATA EMPIRE, spoken aloud to NO ONE, come true.
It’s that time of year again: here are some of the books I’ve enjoyed this summer. If you’ve read any good ones, let me know!
My fifteen year old told me “there are only two kinds of relationships you can have with coding. You can either have a love-hate relationship or you can have just a hate relationship.”
I’m sure someone somewhere has some numbers that say this is a good strategy.
I’ve been thinking about this reporting for days. It makes me physically ill to imagine the destruction of rare texts in order to feed the hallucination machine Everyone involved in this should be dropped into a pit and left to rot
"The world's best AI training data is setting on a shelf."
This is a completely bonkers take, because there was zero outrage marketing for The Odyssey, Elliott Page and Lupita Nyong'o were barely in any promotional anything for the film. It's basically saying that trans people and Black people should be erased from Hollywood, but wokely.
People really struggle with this concept but: How will you prove YOU deserve due process if you aren’t afforded due process?
Another reminder: if there exists *any* class of people who don't have due process rights, then *nobody* actually has due process rights because the government can always just say you're in that class.

I don’t think social media is good for young people, I barely think it’s good for adults. I also am pretty aware of the limited mechanisms the government has to enforce online age verification, and that they’re generally bad.
More than anything the theme of the current era of rising hate for me is "but... why?" Evil for evil's sake seems reductive, and yet we see time and again large organisations doing stupid and cruel things that don't make them any money.
This is how I see code written by AI coding agents as well. It's seems fast and efficient to the people using them. But it's going to take so much time to review the code and debug if something goes wrong.
slop is something that takes more human effort to consume than it took to produce. When my coworker sends me raw Gemini output he’s not expressing his freedom to create, he’s disrespecting the value of my time
It's Trans Day of Visibility today. If you're trans and are raising money for something (I don't care what it is), reply to this thread and I will boost you. If you are a cis person, take a look and find someone to support if you can. Everyone give this a share after.
This sign raises many questions, which probably should be answered by the sign but aren't
Thinking you’re apolitical is like thinking you “don’t have an accent”—it just means you haven’t thought about it very much.
“To state the problem simply, the incentives to produce high-quality information for public consumption are awful. And they’re getting worse with the explosion of AI.”
you laugh but i found the 5,000 piece "long-term nuclear waste warning messages" set really fun to build, even the repetitive parts where you build the black obsidian spikes over and over
I know that Americans have the collective memory of goldfish but I the second I saw Minnesotans in Family Guy pajama pants telling federal agents to eat shit to their faces I knew something had shifted
Walking thru the “Ultra Normie” No Kings rally in my extremely rural, white town and there are Patagonia wearing moms carrying signs that say “DEAD PEDOPHILES DONT REOFFEND” and “ICE GETS THE WALL” and I hi fived an old guy with a sign that said MY DADDY FOUGHT NAZIS AND SO WILL I” this is wild
I discard many, maybe even most of my posts before sending them. Often I even delete posts that I read back and think are fine but aren’t really contributing much. And I try not to reply to the same person too frequently. Etc.
just try and remember that you might feel like you're saying one thing or asking one question of someone, but a) you're not entitled to that person's time just because you're on the same website, and b) there might be 100 other people saying the same thing, and you're contributing to a wall of noise
a change I've been trying to make lately is to stop talking about statistical models built on large data sets like they are living beings. ChatGPT says -> the output was AI tools -> statistical models
