one hotshot programmer cannot ship a solution. it takes a team, so being able to work effectively in and contribute effectively to a team is far *far* more valuable than raw technical ability.

I’m a fine art grad, working in software development for over a decade now, and you’ll hear this again and again from people who do well in the field. there are very few truly technical problems. almost all are *socio*technical. the work is about relations and communication.

In a world of machine intelligence, the humanities are more vital than ever and I think I've not said enough about that. I work in cybersecurity for my day job. I'm a professional hacker and most people understand that as being really good at coding and understanding computers which is true.

You've seen fireworks that look like jellyfish, but what about a jellyfish that looks like fireworks? The E/V Nautilus filmed this rare Halitrephes maasi jellyfish glowing like a firework at a depth of 4,019 feet (1,225 meters) off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. (📷: Ocean Exploration Trust)

When the final report comes out, please consider reading at least the exec summary if you can. Don't rely on publications that have already drawn their own conclusions and benefit from your outrage-sharing. You are no more immune to clickbait and misinformation than anybody else.

With the final report of the autism, ADHD and mental health review expected soon, here's a reminder of what their interim report actually said. We, as a community, helped bury this by giving all our attention to a misleading Times headline on publication day instead. Let's not do that again.

Remember Streeting's review into whether young people are being overdiagnosed with ADHD, autism, and mental health issues? Well, the interim report is out, and there's a reason the media are silent on it (spoiler: it proves what a lot of us have been saying all along)

In others, notably ADHD and autism, rising diagnoses and referrals appear to exceed changes in underlying epidemiological prevalence and are likely to reflect a combination of:

improved recognition
changing help-seeking behaviour
institutional incentives
pressures within existing service pathways
Across both ADHD and autism, best currently available population-based estimates remain relatively stable, while administrative diagnoses, self-identification and recorded service demand have increased substantially. In autism, the evidence also points to particularly rapid growth in identified need within educational systems, including increasing identification among girls and among young people without learning disability.

A group of trans and trans affirming therapists are offering short term therapy at very low cost to any patients in the Welsh trans community who are affected by the suspension of surgeries in the Welsh Gender Service. Please contact alistair@diversemind.co.uk

Friendly Reminder: 3DS, Vita and Switch all use a type of flash memory that needs an electrical charge every decade or so to keep the game data from corrupting. TLDR: Boot up all your games and make a save on them to help preserve them into the future!

...If anybody's looking for a person who basically does everything from compiler {backend, frontend} development, GPU driver development, to hardware/firmware security research, let me know.

ADHD is like having an entire writing team in your head vaguely circling the idea you’re meant to be working on but taking the story every which way. Also you never actually hired any of these people but you have to deal with all their thoughts all the time.
