this sounds absurd but the indignity of growing up in a town that has "ye oldde shoppe" and a bunch of posh beachhouses that fill up for the summer is on the same level as China's century of humiliation
nothing better than a tourist town that resents the tourists. thank you for coming to my ten-seat microbrewery and vintage ice cream shoppe. you son of a bitch
The concussion clinic at UCSF can’t see me until October, **after my disability leave is over** and something got fucked with my paperwork so I haven’t gotten paid since I started leave and the main effects of my head trauma mean I can’t be on my laptop or phone for more than 15 mins and just…
It’s been a hot minute since I was in an actual pulpit, but they’re why I can do a juggling kick-up with a milk crate.

Guys, I'm breaking the thread for a moment. This should be a regular reminder: Make somebody feel seen. A nurse, a teacher, the dish busser at your favorite coffee shop, somebody with whom you share a slender but real connection. There will come a time when those moments are precious to you.

When I started these they kept looking too pristine and pretty and not meeting the "wasteland" request, my strategy evolved into using the wrong hammer and the wrong side of the hammer for every task. Y'all don't know how much it hurts to intentionally leave hammer marks on finished products

Hey. Go clean your glasses. Warm water and soap, dry with cloth. Not a paper towel. The fibers can scratch them up.

Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

I got back into knitting during early lockdown after not doing it for nearly 15 years, and it is genuinely *wild* to be able to take math, string, and sticks, and make stuff like this. (If I ever knit stuff for you it is the equivalent of pledging my sword to your cause.)
If you’re on the fence about picking up a fiber art, I highly recommend it! It has been so incredibly rewarding and I’m so grateful a dear friend of mine encouraged me to give it a try.

How was your morning? My kid exclaimed “That’s not a body!” during consecration of the host, kind of an important part of the Catholic Mass
I don't think people quite understand chronic illness, what it's like to "wake up tired" but still have a million things to do. Deciding where to invest your energy as you're operating on 20% of what everyone else has. Even the most basic stuff like washing yourself or making a meal is draining.

I have to travel for a family funeral next week and I’ve been thinking about how I would handle a situation like this. Dr. Croft does an excellent breakdown of the psychology that goes into this type of “spiritual warfare,” and my backpack now has a mason jar of earplugs for fellow passengers.
She got kicked off an Alaska Airlines flight for preaching, then filmed a 7-part "persecution" series about it. Part 7 accidentally proves nobody ever told her to stop. Broke down the psychology, the actual Bible verses, and the data behind it. Link in thread. medium.com/@drleocroft/...
What's your personal great white whale of an unsolved mystery? The thing you desperately hope is solved before you die because you need to know the answer? Mine is the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum heist. Where the hell are the Rembrandts. I need the full story
I was walking through the church telling people we’d be starting the funeral in about five minutes, so they should take their seats and one of the young women responded, “Thank you, five.”

Doing some thinking today about eugenics and fascism as responses to, not just causes of, mass death. Some people cope with unprocessable communal grief and horror by rationalizing unbearable mass death as necessary or desirable, and bury the horror so deep they lose compassion entirely.
It’s eugenics. It’s all, always, eugenics. Deployed against more and more groups of people the longer it’s tolerated by the public.
Neurology scheduler: If you don’t mind me asking, how did you sustain the concussion? Me: Which one? Because [whole history]. NS: Up front, I am SO SORRY this happened to you, but also I’m biting the inside of my cheek trying not to laugh about how these happened; am I allowed to laugh?
