Inspired by @pds.dad 's AMA about #atproto over on #Mastodon ... AMA about #ActivityPub and the #Fediverse! No question is too basic! (If questions get beyond my knowledge I'll at least try to point you in the right direction 😃)

@fentiger.wtf
I first showed up here while experimenting with decentralised/distributed social media software. A few real-life friends are starting to show up now, though. Hmm. AKA @FenTiger on the Fediverse, or Wrongfellow in a few other places.
Somehow I've managed to get a bit of stock cube in my coffee. I have no idea how, but I can tell from the taste. I think I actually quite like it.
tbh i think the thing that makes me feel the most out of place in a decent few programming circles is this idea a lot of people have that you would only ever make something if your goal is to "make it big" and become a big successful company. that business brained mindset makes me uncomfortable
🚨 stage 4 is live! 🚨
My @roomy.space roadmap for next few weeks: 1. Private spaces + invites 2. Permissioned channels + roles 3. Big refactor to AppView + XRPC interface / thin client 4. Push notifications all parallel to @zicklag.dev speccing and implementing an ‘arbiter’ RBAC service for ATProto permissioned spaces
So what you're suggesting is that the requirements for a data storage layer might depend on the design of the client application? Heresy! ;)
Sharing this! Wish I'm not late for #IETF126 Tangled found PDS doesn't fit well for contributions even with upcoming permissioned space spec. So, we are planning to store record-like data outside of PDS, in Knot. This is a post explaining the reasons & upstream spec change we need. #atproto #atdev
Having already earned my first million dollars from the tech industry, I've deemed my money & time best spent on helping another 1000 people make their first $1million. One million dollars is not "f-u" money, it's "hey, let's dream together" money. Enough to be life-changing but not corrupting.
I wanna make $1million for a thousand indies

Someone from my household came up with this new @mu.social flavor. Should we start working on it? Hearts would be stars in this one of course.

The Long Tail of Work Left Until ActivityPub Has E2EE
Separate from my proposal for key transparency for the Fediverse (which I've certainly blogged about a lot), the W3C has been working on building out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for ActivityPub. The two projects are mostly being developed independent of each other, though connecting the two should be straightforward. As I prepare to tie up the loose ends and call my side of the work "feature complete" and consider tagging a major version 1.0.0 for the specification and reference implementations, I thought it would be useful to lay out the work that needs to be done in order to get this over the finish line--in part, because this is where…

More players urgently needed! It's so tempting to join with my test accounts ... but I think that might be cheating.
FYI something fun and exciting will happen at 400 citizens 😇

Following the general release and tentative pro-plan for @roomy.space here's a transparency report & vision for our proto-company's financials. 1. Seed Money 2. The Deal - for Roomy contributors 3. Outstanding Debts - to Roomy contributors -> a replicable model for purpose-driven companies.

I read the new EU Court ruling on algorithms and social platforms so you don't have to. Turns out to be the most consequential thing a European court has said about recommendation algorithms, and also it just breaks when you apply it to the atmosphere connectedplaces.online/the-algorith...
The Algorithm, Singular
A new European ruling on algorithmic amplification determines if an operator controls how content spreads on a platform. But applying it to open social networks turns out to be a problem.

It's been almost a week since we announced Roomy's general availability and we've definitely got some stuff to fix! We'll be trying to make some development notes as we go, and here's the first one.

hey so, @roomy.space is now generally available for real-world use! 🥳 make atmospheric group spaces for friends & community, chat in real-time, progressively structure emergent topics into evergreen threads and cultivate enduring knowledge.

It is possible to have federation that keeps end users in control and doesn't allow 3rd party copying of your data without your consent. That's exactly what @peergos.org protocol does. There are of course tradeoffs but it is the right choice for user agency and democracy.
the eYou people, a closed european twitterclone that is now using didplc for identity, seem to be reading my posts and have figured out the fairly horrifying implications of it
Please keep them in mind….Vets and Pets.
So C2S activitypub + portable object + a few other FEPs ends up looking approximately vaguely close-ish to AT Protocol's PDS

Bloody thunderstorm just rebooted my dev server. Note to self: Must buy new battery for UPS. On the bright side: Woohoo! Thunderstorm!
auth: it's just a list! authorization tends to bring out Strong Opinions ™️ so we decided to try to keep it as simple as possible in the protocol & let the applications build higher-level abstractions give it a read & let me know your thoughts!
Permissioned Data Diary 6: Boring Auth
In which we resist the temptation to invent a clever authorization model & pick the boring one instead.

If we collaborate more, then we lift all of our visions and projects up. The idea that folks write their own OAuth client is kinda a weird one, we opted to take this on after survey what existed for swift and realising we really needed something different.
