convincing people that computers are smart was a huge mistake. computers are exactly as stupid now as they were in 1975, they're just much faster at stupid.

Slop purveyor: my machine lets me produce 6,000 gallons of hot dogshit per day. How do you think you can possibly compete with that? Literally any creative person: by not producing 6,000 gallons a day of hot dogshit, mostly
We seem to have returned, after a century’s interval, to a world in which great powers are prepared to wage war in pursuit of national interest.

What remains one of the best life hacks I’ve ever learned: at any chain that has a phone number-based rewards system needed for discounts (CVS, Duane Reade, etc.), simply put in the local area code followed by 867-5309. There is always already an account. You will always get the discount.

For what is apparently the 10,001st post on Skepchick (and my own 3,000th), it's a HAPPY STORY of how scientists have shown that Dolly Parton is substantially improving literacy rates around the world through her Imagination Library 🧪 skepchick.org/2026/02/stud...

Fascinating study. One thing I’ve said a lot is that in a post-skinnerian field we are finding cognitive complexity wherever we look in the animal kingdom and this study starts by saying that where sentience can’t be confidently stated it’s in cephalopod species that haven’t been studied much.
This open access paper in Biological Reviews offers an up-to-date synthesis of the scientific evidence on cephalopod sentience 🐙🦑 It considers 120+ studies using an 8-criterion framework: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... @zoophilosophy.bsky.social @birchlse.bsky.social

As my teacher Donella Meadows said, when systems science & wisdom traditions point the same way, when the analytical & the intuitive line up, pay attention. I'm grateful for all the systems teachers and all the contemplative teachers - may we heed them now in this critical moment for life on earth.
So grateful to @bethsawin.bsky.social for (re) posting this beautiful thought, which i first encountered on Twitter (before you know what) and which I’ve been quoting ever since Such a clear expression of the connection between the false idea of our separateness and systemic suffering and injustice
