Going off to a conference tomorrow and when I was registering, I was worried because I really didn’t have anything new to present. Someone told me that I don’t have to present and we could just go. I had a real “wait we can do that??” reaction to that

It's genuinely a massive problem that the median voter both 1) believes "criminal illegal immigrants" to be an astronomically more serious threat than they actually are, and 2) believes that the legal immigration process is substantially easier than it actually is.

People straight up both envision a system much milder than exists and cannot imagine a modern world without that imaginary system. By default they have no real grasp of reality on the matter, but are usu. sympathetic to individuals.
I assigned a Green Card simulation game to my students (based on the actual process) and to a 1, virtually every student was baffled and really taken aback at how much of a labyrinth “getting in the right way” is and how easy it is to slip up.

Floyd@jfloyd314.bsky.social · 2d agoGenuinely, the vast majority of American voters believe that only laziness or criminal intent could be stopping the average immigrant from obtaining US citizenship. The truth is that becoming a US citizen takes years upon years of work and requires navigating a baroque bureaucratic nightmare.
I’ve been writing a counter narrative of shutdowns that has me revisiting media from that time. And let me tell you, the only other option was everybody die. So yeah.

One of the most black-pilling things I ever experienced as a sociologist was getting to see in real time just how much everyday life could be changed in 2020-21 and then reactionary fash forces being like “lawl nope” and gleefully making life worse.

I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them

Further interesting scenario is human recollection / notes (taken by habit by a person) conflict with AI summary
Someone else pointed it out but you can absolutely push it back to 60. MLK warned that the GOP was rapidly becoming “the white man’s party” back in 1964 after they nominated Goldwater who openly opposed the Civil Rights Act.

I’ve been saying for years that anyone who wants to get involved with modern conservative politics needs to be looked at with the sort of suspicion and revulsion that used to be reserved for True Crime tumblrs a decade ago
