this isn't very popular to say, but for me personally, it was good that i had unrestricted internet access when i was a minor. i was aware of what i was doing and enjoyed it. i don't look back on it and go "well that was a mistake", i look back on it and wish i could do it for the first time again

There is room in feminism to hear the perspectives of both women and men. You can't form coherent opinions about how women's experiences differ from men's if your idea of men's experiences has no basis in actually listening to men.

"one group is categorically socialized to doubt their feelings and to predict others intentions" describes *me*, a man. Perhaps the topic is more complex than a simple reduction to man/woman. Economic class, or IMHO, neurodivergent/typical would *also* apply perhaps even moreso than gender.

Aside from an apparently fixed period of time where language acquisition is supercharged, childhood learning is full of variation and fits and starts and very few losses are truly irrecoverable if you don't make kids feel like hopeless losers for being 'behind'.

The whole point of politics is to stand for something, make an argument, and win people over. If you’re already giving up half of that by meeting them where they are and conceding on your values, what the fuck are you even doing? Politics is fluid and people change their minds all the time.

I view kids reading webtoons rather than War and Peace in their free time as a sign they are overworked and exhausted at school. If you want kids to engage in more "intellectual" activities in their free time, they need more humane working conditions to have some energy left over to do so.

Teenagers are pretty competent at seeing through adult bullshit, and when you tell them "get off your phones and touch grass" and then arrest them for doing that, they understand that what you actually want is for them not to exist at all!

IDK, I’m not a huge fan of this way of thinking. If you’re going to tell jerks to stop being jerks, that’s fine. If you’re going to label all debate or questions whatsoever around controversial topics as problematic, that just seems anti-intellectual.

I do not understand the "fairness in sports" thing, in part because it isn't a thing, but also "fair to who" is always the question. People who are taller have an advantage in basketball. Does that mean we ban tall people? Why would THAT be fair?

I have got an idea, we just don’t teach our children how to read and write. This way, they will be safe from harm.

In addition to all the below..by design a bunch of 18 year olds are suddenly out of the family home in some form of work or tertiary education, and we keep shunting the 'here's a bunch of painful lessons you learn as you get older' further into people's lives, when they are more catastrophic.

The Children's Commissioner wants the social media ban extended to 18. Even though people will be able to vote at 16. The Beatles first went to Hamburg when George Harrison was 17. You can also decide to take on £50k of tuition fee debt at 17.

IDK if this is what this person means, but it could be an interesting concept to have a social media platform that is only open for a few hours a day. Like how Wordle went viral by restricting players to one game a day, meaning the rest of the day was spent anticipating and talking about it.

A time-of-day restriction is definitely a thing that can be implemented by all of these apps and services.

A social media ban for kids under 16 is like banning kids from the streets because they are not safe, instead of making the streets safe.

So folks understand the problems with the New York Times didn’t just start under Trump. The Times was the top promoter of invading Iraq (far more influential than Fox News) and it forwarded smears of the Clintons and Al Gore. The Times even did PR for Adolf Hitler before WWII. The problem isn’t new.

It’s so funny how the smart people media (NYT, NPR) is so committed to making everything that happens in US elections look smart and interesting. No they’re not weighing in on “what it means to be a man,” the Republican is calling the other guy gay 50 million times a day.

children are in many respects functionally a marginalized group; parents are encouraged to and often do treat them as property. it takes a lot of work to push against that dynamic, and hardly anyone is entirely successful.

Why is it people who oppose genocide need to compromise, and never the people who want to genocide?

Always tapping the “having rich parents doesn’t magically grant kids actual societal power and it definitely doesn’t preempt abuse at home including withholding of food as punishment” sign. All schoolchildren should have the option to get a meal at school, free of charge and no questions asked.

I don't only think that college should be FREE but I think young people should also receive living stipends while in school. Finally, I do not care what they major in because education needs to actually BE DECOUPLED from a future job. You are welcome. You should have 4 years to study anything.
