I've spent enough time in Kate Elliott's books now that I know the world will be solid to the point of feeling like travel, so I'm picking up titles I didn't finish before because now I trust that the world will be worth the visit ⭐️ highly recommend

I agree with this, and I think it typifies the tendency to get mad when all the possible solutions are imperfect and yet we still have to choose one. people want there to be one right solution with no downsides, and get weirdly furious when that doesn't exist.

I think it’s hard to argue either that lockdowns were bad policy or that learning loss wasn’t real. We just have a society that makes no allowances for emergencies and affords no chance of making up. A lot of people are very mad about the effects of that without having any inclination to change it.

Aside from the fucked up morality of it all, is it not TRANSPARENTLY obvious that people who want to train children to submit to invasive bodily testing are people who should never have access to children? This FEELS obvious to me.

Re neurodevelopmental conditions: diagnoses are increasing, but people aren't faking it. They were always there but not diagnosed--perhaps they couldn't access diagnosis, perhaps they were invisible because compensating, which came with acute anxiety (and frequent burnouts and mental health crises)

this is correct I think, and at least a small part of this trauma is exacerbated by the generational shift away from education in the Humanities that preceded it. reading novels, watching films, understanding history about mass death (or death in general) helps you process stuff in the real world

One of my Crank Theories of Everything, at least of Everything in the Recent Past, is that we are dealing (badly) with COVID trauma we’d mostly prefer to pretend never happened.
