the first disease modifying therapies for MS didn’t emerge until the mid-90s. now we have a whole bunch of em for RRMS, including several high efficacy ones, and a couple for PPMS. this is not an isolated case in medicine. we got so many more good treatments for all kinds of stuff now.

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

In 1986, contracting HIV meant you were going to die, usually slowly, painfully, and alone. Now it's a chronic illness like hypertension. In 1986, gay and lesbian couples couldn't have their relationships legally recognized and had to adopt elaborate legal workarounds.

Bay Area friends: would you consider opening your home to these two cuddly cats? A friend found them behind a gas station. Their sibling, a black cat, got adopted, but it appears no one likes orange cats. They are being kept in a bathroom for the time being and need a home.

A friend of mine found these three kittens behind a Bay Area gas station. They are tame, vaccinated, and incredibly affectionate. Unfortunately, she's unable to keep them and I'm trying to find them a home. They are at risk of going to a shelter. Bay Area people, are you open to adopting?

Three kittens in a cage. Two are orange and one is black.

You don’t have to worry about trans women in sports. You do have to worry about trans women in your walls, eating a big crumb as a whole meal off a table they made out of a wooden spool, and taking baths in a bottle cap

if a muslim immigrant wrote an article stating he wanted to rape british schoolchildren (as liddle did) the press now praising liddle would be outraged. not on behalf of any potential danger to children, though, they don't care about that. they'd be outraged at the writer not knowing his place

me: the simpsons have four fingers on each hand so you’d think they’d live in a base 8 society but as far as I can tell there’s no evidence of that in the show my wife: *screaming during labor* the obgyn: hold on i want to hear more about this

Rod liddle had a police caution for domestic violence against his then pregnant girlfriend. He once wrote in one of his columns that he could never be a teacher because his urge to rape children was too strong. He is now dead. Obviously no kipper for him.

genuinely feel like these people equate all of the misery of covid with the closures. the alternative to closing schools was not “the life they should have had” (whatever that even means). that time period would still have been fucking awful because they were living through a serious global pandemic

There are working class and vulnerable kids who will never have the life they should have had because of school closures. Let’s address that too, shall we?

buckaroo has decided he wants to hang out with his dad today, which is fine, obviously. I’m glad they’re having a nice time together. but I also feel so bereft. just looking over at his bed next to my desk and seeing it empty 😭

Going to public school in a wealthy area, I knew kids whose parents made well above the minimum income for our means-tested school lunch program who were constantly hungry because their wealthy parents withheld food. Kids as young as as 7 or 8 being subjected to absolutely cruel diets.

sarah zedig 🐐@hmsnofun.bsky.social · 2w ago

what it comes down to is this. everyone who attends a public school should get a free lunch. period. you cannot means test a child's hunger. if you try, sorry not sorry, you're doing eugenics. fix your fucking heart or die.

i'm mad about the inane and senseless destruction of a 900 year old archaeological site, yes, very mad i'm even more mad about the genocide those same destroyers have been committing against actual humans because people matter more than archaeology, to be clear but i'm also mad about the castle

Very early in the pandemic, I spent 2 terrible weeks in isolation, unable to breathe or walk across the room. Waiting my temp. to spike. Worrying about my kids. Fighting against dying. In the middle of this covid revisionist, anti-vax bullshit, it was worth saying what that felt like:

Poem titled "Gnawed." The text of the poem reads:

Gnawed

Kalends of April, 2020

I can feel the rat,
dark and angry,
buried
in the furrows of my chest,
trying hard to pull apart
the fiber of my breathing.
Twisting. Writhing.
Clawing
with a feral-hearted hatred
at the bonds that sinew
soul to skin.
I cannot walk across the room without
the rasping of its teeth
along the inside of my ribs,
or speak without it screaming
in the shallows of my breath.
I can only lie beyond
the borders of my life,
checking the thermometer
a hundred times a day
as all the while
I am being
eaten
from the inside out.
