Gut microbes shape the body’s response to vaccination. Researchers led by Ruth Ley discovered that the human gut microbiome may help determine how strongly the immune system reacts to vaccination, with bacterial flagellins contributing to inflammatory responses: www.bio.mpg.de/569449/news_...

Gut microbes help set the body’s response to vaccination

Das menschliche Darmmikrobiom könnte mitbestimmen, wie stark das Immunsystem auf Impfungen reagiert. Dabei tragen bakterielle Flagelline zu Entzündungsreaktionen bei.

Huge congratulations to all three Nobel Laureates, and especially Peter Hegemann! 👏 His seminal work on the green alga Chlamydomonas 🦠 laid the foundation for optogenetics. Thank you for putting Chlamy in the spotlight! ✨ Proof that groundbreaking discoveries don't always come from animal models! 🔬

~Approximately no one in the general public knows because the leaders of the R1 research universities - whose budgets, programs, & personnel are entirely or significantly dependent on federal funding - have been totally absent from the public square in explaining & collectively protesting this.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

Happy to share that our paper, where we used single-molecule microscopy to study cell size control in budding yeast, is out in PNAS! This work was led by Huan in my group, in collaboration with Jan Skotheim, @mpswaffer.bsky.social, and Maria Vera. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2607883123
