“If you take the deal, you’re going to be exploited. If you don’t take it, you’re going to die,” said attorney Frank Ssekamwa about the U.S. demand to access the health data of millions of Ugandans. “It’s the essence of digital colonialism.”

“Digital Colonialism”: U.S. Demands to Access Africans’ Data Raise Privacy, Sovereignty Concerns

The United States is requiring access to health data as part of lifesaving aid deals with African countries. The U.S. says the data will be aggregated and anonymized, but privacy experts fear the info...

I'm a full Professor of Immunology and fully vaccinated. I didn't get vaccinated out of obedience, but after decades of studying the immune system and evaluating all evidence. Calling that "lack of critical thinking" is not an argument. It's ideology masked as pretend intellect.

Sarah Hanson-Young tears into ACMA following their Senate evidence, saying they’re an “absolute lapdog” for the gambling industry. “I don’t know what those people do”🔥

The entirety of the NHS, from inception, was made possible thanks to non-white immigrants. Every accusation is a confession. They don’t want talented people regardless of skin colour. They just want white people regardless of skills.

I’ll support public funding for security at Jewish events, schools and synagogues, if the Jewish lobby support my right to condemn Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Of course not. This was never about the former. It was always about the latter.

In addition to this very real focus group issue, I think there's a kind of psychological thing about the potential 'availability of good tradespeople' which activates the pleasure centres of the middle class brain. One struggles to get good people to do one's renovations, doesn't one.

Glen O'Hara@gsoh31.bsky.social · last wk.

The only reason Russell Group Humanities grads in politics and journalism chuff on and on about 'learning a trade' is the focus groups of hero voters assembled by... Russell Group grads. It's grim.

A lot of people I really respect have been working hard for a long time to make this style of engagement *not* be the norm in academia. None of the people I am around do this (and would never valorize it) because it is the worst thing about the academy.

I don’t really want to get into this with people who feel this way, but i don’t think this is a good thing! We don’t need to behave this way! It’s not healthy to approach academic discourse as an exercise in harshness!

Screenshot of a post that reads “It's incredible is how little folks understand about academe. Peer review is brutal. Academic Q+A is Troy level slaughter. Bros attacking a lady academic for a fair review would shit themselves on stage after a paper and break down into toddler tears after their first conference paper w a mean Q+A.

If you watch anything on #Moroccans coming to #Ceuta, make it this report. CBS News have interviewed some of them & they confirm that social media posts on Facebook & Instagram told them Spain had opened its borders. They're playing with people's hopes & lives. It's awful. We must combat fake news.

for a very long time the republican party has been moving towards people who actually believe the slop they consume instead of people who view it as a tool, but the slop has been moving as well the fox news grandpas are now being outflanked by the groypers in the fever swamps

Not only did they absolutely beg for this, they made it so that “merit” was synonymous with being white so now you’re stuck with precisely the kind of moron who believes that. www.politico.com/news/magazin...

Everyone knows what the problem is: The organizations that bring young staffers to Washington, D.C. have spent the last decade prioritizing blind ideological loyalty instead of competence or intelligence,” said a senior GOP congressional staffer, granted anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel issues. “We have a generation of rabid, incompetent idiots.”

Academia is a bit like high school except social capital accrues to the people who are the best at making nerdy arguments rather than the captain of the football team. It gets used for bullying and domination in analogous ways

I don't think there's ever been much of an intellectual justification for this kind of culture, to me the aggro Q&A is pretty transparently service to inert nerd masculinity and serves no other function

I realize these are all things that sex workers have told us and could tell us better. Consumer-facing AI is basically a sex worker so of course it’s personalizing various iterations of financial domination for men because that’s what they want.

In Barcelona, hundreds of people remembered Hind Rajab by carrying her giant portrait. The six-year-old girl who asked for help over the phone while the Israeli army surrounded her. She was killed along with her family and the paramedics who tried to rescue her. Months later, her face remains
