Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>

Here's the thing: most books that are banned don't make the lists that get circulated each #BannedBooksWeek. If you're a book creator and your book gets banned, please respond to this post with your book and its buy link on bookshop.org. That way we can support indies and banned books 💛

Bookshop.org: Buy books online. Support local bookstores.

A better way to buy books online. Every purchase financially supports local independent bookstores.

Not to insomnia-weigh-in on the concept of restorative justice, but I thought long and hard ten years ago about what I would say if someone asked what Alex Kozinski could do by way of restorative justice. (Nobody ever asked.)

In almost every poll, Mike Rogers can’t seem to break past 45% while Abdul El-Sayed is doing well (even clearing 50) but doing worse than Jocelyn Benson. The results in November will likely allow people to shoehorn their own narrative regardless

My rocket engineer told me the ocean keep eating his rockets so I asked how many rockets he has and he said he just goes to the Starbase and gets a new rocket afterwards so I said it sounds like he’s just feeding rockets to the ocean and then his CEO started crying.

My conspiracy theory of the day: I've been getting more spam emails make it to the inbox with Gmail. My theory: google is allowing more spam through intentionally because it makes it seem to spammers that GenAI is crafting better/harder to detect spam, so they can sell more LLM tokens.

It’s life and death. Until we snap out of it and address that, we’re going to see arguments about visible tattoos and short skirts and hairstyles and religious (not Christian) symbols. They’ll make it feel petty. It isn’t.

Meanwhile the real miraculous future tech is solar & mRNA vaccines: preserving the planet and curing cancer. But we’re supposed to hand everything over to malevolent peeping toms and resource oubliettes for an ill defined ‘pay no attention to the man behind the curtain’ progress. It isn’t rational.

"I belong to a cult. Someone did some research that undermines the core tenets of my cult and came up with a catchy phrase that makes it harder to recruit more people to my cult. This makes me sad."

Screencap of tweet on X from @jackclarkSF (Jack Clark):

"stochastic parrot" was a mimetically-fit cognitive virus that spread from 2021-2025; it temporarily blinded many gifted people to the nature of AI progress, burning up crucial years in which they could have helped think through the response to the situation.

My oldest was feeling under the weather today, so I took him to the doctor to get checked out. Because it was last minute, it was a new doc at a new location. The doctor walked into the room and asked if it was okay for him to use a note writer on his phone. Immediately sus, I asked if it was AI.

I'd have thought that the goal of a nominally centre-left political party would be to build a voter base of marginalised groups with overlapping interests and not to deliberately alienate minorities and then get arsey about it. But, what I failed to consider is, they don't want to.

One thing I've learned working in software process compliance. As soon as you start to make exceptions, people start looking for exceptions. Doing the work to do something the right way is sometimes hard work! It's usually faster to say 'well, this is a rare case, so we bend the rule this once."
