Shouldn’t be shocked at any lie RFK Jr tells, but he whined to Dana Bash that businesses were shut down during the pandemic “with no just compensation.” There was an almost trillion dollar PPP loan program, and his organization got millions from it, none of it paid back, to make payroll.

That's what business AI-adoption has looked like to me. Management wants a magic button to increase output >2x while cutting staff by >50%. The actual (and few) AI success stories are all "expert in the field is also computer-savvy and built a custom harness for a fractional productivity increase."

The other question Suresh implicitly raises is, "How can you reconcile the failure of AI in the enterprise with the individual claims of skilled technologists who insist that AI is helping them do great work?" You don't "100x" your code this way, at least, not in the sense of firing 99 of your coders and having the remaining programmer pick up all their work. Rather, an automation tool that requires the continuous and conscientious exercise of discernment will let individual practitioners improve their work in extremely satisfying and useful ways. It's a way to spend more on operations in order to produce better outputs. It's not a way to cut your workforce, realize a gigantic savings, and still produce comparable goods and services at a far lower cost.

Watching Star Trek TNG over again, with my 13yr old. I think this show fucked up my generation because it convinced us that villains tend to concede when Picard points out the moral consequences of their plans, and their unforeseen impact on other people’s rights and dignity.

Was recently at an intl conference where I ran into some Americans I hadn’t seen in 2 yrs. When asked why I hadn’t been down and I told them I’m boycotting the states, they chuckled, made gentle remarks about how Trump’s Canada stance was silly. Americans have no idea how pissed off Canadians are.

A contractor building Meta's data center flushed its "closed-loop" cooling system straight into Cheyenne's sewer. It carried a bacterium and knocked the city's water-reuse system offline for months. They sell these as sealed systems that barely touch the water. This one poisoned a city's.
