This thread from the Spanish Foreign Office is really useful for anyone faced with mis/disinformation about the situation in Ceuta. There is one hell of a lot of that about at the moment!! Please use it to counteract ignorant claims, wherever they're from. It's available in French and Spanish too.

1/5 🧵 Entering Spain irregularly through Ceuta or Melilla does not grant any right to remain in the country, travel to mainland Spain, or move freely within Europe. It also poses a grave risk to life. No court ruling has changed this. 🔗 www.exteriores.gob.es/en/Comunicac...

A party that was actually anti-racist would be kicking this person out, not allowing them to run for the Governing Committee. There are many decent Greens who will be disgusted by this and I wish them all power fighting back against it. We know from experiance how hard that is.

Good piece. A thread on some comments I made yesterday on Times Radio. Two things can be true at the same time: 1. It’s very bad to have 60,000 people storm a border, and 70+ deaths. 2. European leaders' responses were opportunistic and disproportionate, and made incidents like this more likely.

Vance, Farage and Weidel posted fear-mongering messages about a Spanish migrant crisis that weren't true. They haven't retracted them. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

This piece was published Sat afternoon. It could win awards for incoherence. Its big point is the EU Commission had no interest in stopping these people going into Europe By the time it was published it was clear none had done so www.thetimes.com/comment/colu...

RefUK, RW media, & Eurofash are plainly trying to whip up a panic about this. Any serious report must begin by explaining that Ceuta is in Africa - not mainland Spain - and 48k+ of the 50k crossers were already returned. It is frightening how many still don't know this. Please share on all socials.

Spain's prime minister has blamed trafficking gangs after about 60,000 migrants crossed into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. At least 57 people died during the surge, according to local media."Daily Mail and Daily Express from this weekend, with front page headlines "Ministers MUST stop the Spanish border invaders reaching UK" and "SPANISH BORDER CRISIS IS 'WAKE-UP CALL' FOR UK", respectively.

"Beneath the crystal-clear water, the silhouettes of submerged bodies are visible very close to the El Tarajal border in Ceuta. Two of them are holding hands. They represent the submerged tragedy left in the wake of the mass crossing of people from Morocco."

I think Labour was right to reinstate Abbott, but her speech last month shows why she should’ve retired long ago. She thinks that the toppling of Assad a coup and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is actually a NATO campaign against Russia and the the US is responsible for both. Such an insane worldview.

Diane Abbott’s naming of the Russian full scale war in Ukraine as “NATO campaign against Russia” is a disgrace. m.youtube.com/watch?v=SMBj...

The Ceuta 'crisis' is just political fuckery from Morocco in retaliation for Sánchez' visit to Algeria in July. It's all related to the conflict in Western Sahara. It has nothing to do with Spain's enforcement of the EU's external border. Amazing how thin EU solidarity is on this issue.

Why the border control broke down: there are a few different/overlapping theories (including that the Moroccan govt let it happen as a political gesture or inferred threat, or that smugglers promoted the [false] idea a court decision means no more returns) www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...

Why is Ceuta a migration flashpoint and how were so many people able to cross from Morocco?

An estimated 50,000 people attempted the journey to the Spanish territory in chaotic and dangerous scenes that resulted in dozens of deaths

In case you missed it, the Green Party in Hackney spearheaded a cancellation of the borough's twinning agreement with Haifa, which is one thing, but the Mayor of Hackney has now written to the Mayor of Haifa requesting a reply by *October 7*, which is either stupid or pretty evil, take your pick.

Shift in nature of Burnham announcements between week 1/2. Week 1 felt like it was trying to demonstrate (what I think of as) “politics of trying”, small things to make a difference showing govt is trying to help. Week 2 feels like trying to do a more ambitious “politics of can”

Regret to report that the Sri Lanka-based Facebook nostalgia industry has started RESPECT season early this year. “Life in Britain” was previously building #numbers as “Xiaoyang Grebentsov” until last November, if you want some idea of how this bollocks works.

Yeah, Chris, the French knew it was you, an entirely obscure shadow minister, and could hear what you were saying. This was so alarming to them, they felt compelled to risk a major international incident by essentially threatening to kill you. God, these pathetic people are so totally unserious.
