Translation sponsorship by a successful musician that loves translated literature...brings a tear to this literary translator's/punk's screen-blasted eye (been editing my next translation)

I'll tell you something else deeply meaningful to me today: @archipelagobooks.bsky.social is publishing Sevgi Soysal's "Walking." It's the first translation I've sponsored, something I've wanted to do for a long time. When I read Soysal's "Dawn," I knew I wanted to see her other work in print.

end page from Archipelago Books' English publication of Sevgi Soysal's "Walking." It reads: "Archipelago gratefully acknowledges John Darnielle, who generously supported this translation of Walking. Extremely proud to say I was the localization editing lead for Bubbly Basin, Pokopia's first DLC. Also even more proud of the ridiculously talented team of translators, editors, and fantastic loc folks who made it happen. I hope everyone has a bubbly time playing!

"Why can't you just appreciate how revolutionary the job-taking, environment-degrading, information-shredding, technology-hoarding, economy-swamping machine is?" My brother in Christ, there may indeed be a revolution in part because of "AI," but it might not be the one you wanted.

Vanakkam! Does anyone know any BRYOLOGISTS? We are looking for someone who has researched moss species in South India (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh) to collaborate with us on a small project. Kindly DM. Mikka Nandri!

‘Good photography isn’t about Zone Printing or any other Ansel Adams nonsense. It’s just about seeing. You either see or you don’t see. The rest is academic. Photography is simply a function of noticing things. Nothing more.’ Elliott Erwitt, New York, 1992. Photo Peter Adams.

Photo of a man sitting on a stool. He is wearing a hat with hands on either side which can be moved using strings he is holding. The stool has a single leg carved in the shape of a foot.

To do list for rest of year: Three presentations to write and give, two books (maybe three?) to translate, 3k words to write for tourist sites, a manuscript to edit, a pitch pack for a book. I thought listing it all out would make me feel more in control but now I feel a panic attack coming on.

I'm so tired of "social construct" being used to mean "false beliefs", either for or against. Things that are socially constructed -- e.g. money -- are palpable and often extraordinarily powerful. The denial of the social is a curse.

I was just in a Starbucks and the woman ahead of me was live streaming her visit, dressed in a brown leotard, wearing a construction paper dog head around a face covered in dog makeup. But, she wasn't in character or anything. Just buying sandwiches and asking for "likes." What even... 🤷

I cannot rest from discourse. I will see that film again tomorrow. I will drink life to the lees. Again I will enjoy greatly, will suffer greatly, both with those that love me, and in Pleasantville NY. I am become a meme. Film showing: burnsfilmcenter.org/booking/the-...

I know “J-Horror” makes for snappier headlines but while all J-Horror = Japanese horror, not all Japanese horror = J-Horror. When describing anything outside of 1988-2008 (w/ limited examples up to 2010) it just sounds impatient & deeply incurious, like calling every horror survivor a final girl.

I’m aiming for global publication and need a skilled English editor/line-editor to bring my stories to life in English. Seeking someone who loves horror/speculative fiction and can refine my drafts. Please reply or DM with your rates and past work!
