in 1986, people smoked in banks, in the mall, at McDonald's, at Burger King, everywhere. They especially smoked in houses. This coincided that everyone drank everywhere. People walked around their homes carrying scotch whiskey highballs, people born in the 20s looked like 90s by their 60s.

Most consumer goods, but also larger scale stuff! Construction now is ***way*** better quality than the 1980s (Insulation, wiring,, exterior wall sheathing, window seals, plumbing materials, HVAC systems) Some slop happened in the early 2000s boom, but build quality is way better now

Lots of things are better but the thing that has improved the most? Flashlights. Used to be you’d have a shitty, dim incandescent bulb running off 4 D-cells. Now you can blind a pilot at 35,000 feet with your single AA LED that stays bright for six months.

This is a fun feed. My husband and I had two small children in 1986 and tight budget. So much is better than those “good old days.”

Things that have gotten better in my lifetime 1) airplane safety 2) public safety in general 3) Philadelphia Eagles 4) food, for sure 5) computers 6) TVs 7) can watch sports from anywhere in the world from my house 8) dishwashers 9) weighted blankets 10) music genres 11) your mom 12) medicine

The big change here that I think puts a stake in the heart of the Sentiment The AIDS Memorial Quilt was in 1985, with over 100k names on it. In 2026 we're moving towards a once weekly pill that is almost totally effective at suppressing the virus.

Forty years ago, in 1986, NYC suffered over 1,600 homicides. Homicides would peak at over 2,200 a few years later. There were 305 in 2025.

2026 could be at risk for setting a new record- most expensive national average price of gasoline on Labor Day. currently Labor Day 2012 is the record holder: $3.83/gal. we're at $4.06/gal today- if a deal to reopen the Strait doesn't materialize, we could break that.

I was recently in a few Spanish cities, including Malaga, and it was great to see shade structures all around. The critical thing is that European cities care about people outside of cars. North American cities mostly don't. Shade matters for people walking, biking, rolling, and waiting for buses
